2005 Accord Tourer
This is my second Accord - (Tourer after brief ownership of saloon) and I've never been particularly keen on the steering. There seems to be quite a distinct "give" in feel after about a 1/4 turn. The steering suddenly lightens and I lose confidence in grip. I've also noticed that the tyres I've used wear quite quickly on the outer treads.

Tyres are regularly checked for balancing (which falls off after a period of time) and alignment - all corrected if needed.

I bought the car with standard 16's, and switched to Epsilons as I preferred the overall look of the car with more metal in the arches.

Has anyone else suffered this, or is it just me wanting too much from the car?

I've tried Coopers and Michelin (current), but haven't noticed a marked difference either way.

Also, looking at swapping for winter tyres this year as winter grip was even worse during last year's cold snap. Considering complete wheel sets - anyone else?
 
A few quick questions: are you using premium brand tyres? By alignment are you meaning a proper 4-wheel alignment? What pressures are you running?
 
The Accord definitely has some strange steering dynamics, the way at slow speeds the wheel seems to pull, as if the power steering is changing how much ***istance it gives or something. They're also very twitchy cars I think, being badly affected by makes of tyre and road surface.
No idea what to do about it though.
 
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if most of us share your opinions about the steering to an extent. I've resigned myself to it and accept it's just part of the car's dynamic. I mean with the with of the tyres and relative low profile, there will always be some tramlining. But now, I expect it and counter steering against the phantom turning is second nature. I don't realise I'm doing it much anymore. I can't really afford to run top spec tyres, but do keep my pressures up regularly. But like I said. I've just accepting it as inevitable.

I spoke to my local garage about it (not a Honda garage), the owner there has driven Accords for a long time. He said, no fault, no real reason, it just does it. Although, he was of the opinion that the steering in the facelift model is completely different. Not like the original 7th Gen.

As stated, I've tried it on both Coopers (mid-range - Zeon CS6) and it's currently fitted with Michelin (Premacy) - it felt the same with both.

Seems it's not a fault then - just a "character".

Prior to Accord ownership I was the proud owner of a Seat Leon Cupra (Mk1) and the difference is dramatic.

My wife now drives a Gold 2.0tdi DSG and I much prefer the feel of her car, especially when cornering - feels much more connected.

the steering in my accord is spot on. it is lighter than most cars but feel is fine. definitely no strange feeling at 1/4 turn. I have had a Mondeo Vectra 3 series S60 focus etc and the accord feels as good as the other cars I have had if a little over ***isted but you get used to that.
 
So that's a facelift and a pre-facelift that are good to steer ! that should mean that there is nothing wrong with the 7 gen in particular and probably just tyre fussy and also need good alignment .
 
On my 7th gen the steering used to be twitchy on uneven roads and would pull the car sightly to either side.
I also get the same but not as bad with my 8th gen.I think its an Accord thing as if i hold the wheel with 2 hands i dont notice it as bad.

I originally noticed a problem of tramlining when i first bought my tourer, however after many sets of tyres I've now found some tyres which really feel good on the car. I've just put a pair of Bridgestone S001's on the front of mine and the steering of my Type S feels so precise...the car just feels as though it glides through the corners...an improvement on the Pirelli's I have been using. Can't say I I've had problems with wear - mine have always seemed on the uniform side.
 
I have the pre facelift saloon diesel and never noticed a problem. Steering feels good and tight. I've have several hondas and all feel good to me. Even have a civic with EPS and that feels good too.
Maybe it's early signs of worn track rod ends?

My facelift 7th is a bit twitchy and sometimes pulls in either direction under braking depending on the road surface.
 
I have a facelift Tourer and have similar experiences to previous posts.

Definate tram lining effect on occassion, certainly disconcerting when I initially got the Accord but have got used to it now.

The strange hunting sensation at low speeds when the steering wheel seems to move slightly on its own vocation is I think down the the power steering ram.
They usually have some type of spool valve to direct the fluid to either side of the power steering ram piston and at its mid point it seems to be sensitive.

It's an odd sensation, like the wheel has "given" - almost as if it's folded under. It's tricky to describe. Happens on both wheels - there just seems to be a point where the wheel loses grip. It's a feel thing - I don't know if it actually does lose grip, but it doesn't feel connected the whole way through. Tramlining is something different - this is when cornering. I used to have tramlining when I had the Leon, but that always seemed to be gripping (there was feedback through the steering wheel).

I'm used to it now - but when I drive the wife's Golf, the difference in feedback is marked.

That sounds like shocks? Can you see any leaks on the suspension?
