I think how much of the towbar that is visible when removed depends a lot on the type of removable towbar you have. If you go for a vertical one I would think you would see less of it. The PF Jones website is good for towbars

Before you pull it to bits, have you traveled a reasonable distance from home to see if it bursts in to life? My reason for asking is I have noticed mine going red over part of my journey but it is repeatable in the same area so I am guessing there is a problem with transmitters in that area.
