Hi folks.

My clutch is giving me a bad headache, and i'm hoping some genius mech/tech guru can help out.
Basically the other night i depressed the clutch and engaged reverse gear and without moving the clutch pedal the car started to reverse, I thought i was going nuts and proceeded to drive off. at the next junction I stopped and selected 1st gear the same thing happened and the clutch pedal stayed at the floor with the car driving(hastly pulled up with my foot). This problem only seemed to happen in first and reverse gear although the pedal does now stick down occasionally when testing it.

I bled the system and replaced the fluid as what was in the reservoir was blackish in colour, this didn't sort the problem out. Has any other member had a similar problem, and do you think our guess at the master cylinder is right.
As a side note I ordered an OEM part and was advised that the design of the master cylider changed slightly for the 2002 model requiring new pipework, I enquired with localish Honda garage and the quoted over £300 for new pipework but said they were'nt aware of any design change.
Now very confused and hoping the the OEM part will fit and sort the problem out without a major overhaul of the pipework.

Any advice or ideas would be gratefully recieved

I don't know about any redesign personally, however Pedro (SKELL) has done a howto on the replacement. I'm guessing your seals have gone.

Cheers Andy his problem sounds similar to mine. time to get hands dirty, easier things first before a complete new clutch.

That really sounds like a bad master cylinder.

About the change in the piping, there is something about it the online catalog of ADL Blurpring:
http://www.blueprint-adl.co.uk/newweb/technotes/INF102%20Clutch%20Master%20Cylinder.pdf

What I understand by that, is that the new piping is needed only for the first cars that came out, since they only provide a replacement for newest part.

Any way, I fitted the part from BluePrint and had no problems B)

Cheers Skhell. as i live in the middle of the atlantic the part should be here monday so once i get started ill update. your guide makes it look like not too bad a task, no doubt bleeding knuckles and a few swears are in order:) .

Hope you manage to get it done dude. Let us know how you get on fella.

this does sound like the clutch master cylinder has had it. Keep us updated mate

Hi guys. Well thats the deed done. I got the new master cylinder today(1 day earlier than expected) so got the spanners out and got stuck in. The how to guide on here was superb and I just went along with it. Problems - well yes a couple:-

Getting to the top nut behind the clutch pedal is a nightmare and despite the warnings about dropping the nut I did and the footwell ate it..... despite pulling the carpet up and thoroughly checking I couldnt find the thing. I also managed to break the split pin (no big issue) but by now the knuckles were cut and the air blue. Anyway I managed to get the cylinder out and checked it against the new part... identical. With the old part in hand I decided to push the piston to see what happened and yes you guessed I got clutch fluid in my eye( not clever and a point for others dont try this at home).

Fitting the new part is just as descibed in the guide, although it was difficult getting the pressure line into the cylinder. I purchased a new nut and split pin and reconnected everything. I managed to bleed the system by myself by just running plenty fluid through the resevoir and pumping the clutch six times re-checking and repeating until I was sure no more air was in the system.

In total about 2 hrs work and loads of satisfaction when the fix works. Big thanks to you guys for advice and the how to guide which is brill. A big thanks also to Joe at Japarts for fantastic parts service.

Now a pint coz I saved myself a fortune on garage bills.

Regards
Mac
