Honda Accord Tourer
Hi, I’m a newbie here but I am desperate for some advice. I have a 2005 Honda Accord Tourer 2.2i-cdti that has for some time had a starting problem. when I go to start it first thing or after it has been left for a while, it will crank but really struggles to start. To date I have tried a new starter motor, it’s had a new battery, I’ve replaced the crank shaft sensor, I’ve had the injectors checked & cleaned, I’ve had the fuel pump checked & cleaned. I have also had the fuel supply checked. Once I have managed to start it it runs beautifully. I am getting to the point of throwing in the towel in as I don’t want to spend anymore money on it. It is a lovely car and if I could solve this problem I’m sure it will last me for years. anyone out there got any suggestion on what I can try next that won’t cost a fortune. Thanks

And have you replaced the fuel pressure relief valve? Are there any diagnostic errors or previous codes to go off?

Any other running symptoms? Have you temporarily tried blanking the egr valve? A sticking valve will cause starting issues

We had a error code come up ‘ insufficient flow’ on egr valve but I took it off and cleaned it and the code hasn’t come up again. The engine runs perfectly once started.

fuel pressure relief valve has been checked and all the injection system has been checked by a specialist and they are getting good fuel rail pressure.

So you’ve had P1401 I would say there’s your issue. You can’t actually clean them on these cars, try blanking it off and even though it will be in limp mode if your starting problem is cured you’ll know that your issue. I can provide a permanent solution if you want to go down that route.

Thanks for that, I will give it a go and let you know the outcome.

When I get it off will I be able to see if it is slightly open?

I have blanked off the EGR valve and it starts ok in limp mode but I now have the code P1401 showing, is this due to the EGR valve being blanked off??

So now you know it’s your egr valve you can either replace the valve or get in touch with me for a permanent deactivation solution along with a nice power increase.

Thanks, I will replace the valve and hopefully all will be ok.

Hi F6HAD
i have Done what was suggested. My battery was causing me concern as the voltage on start up was all over the place, but it was starting. I bought a new genuine Honda battery and tried it this morning and it will not start. I’ve just checked the voltage and it’s ok At battery but the OBD voltage is low. should I take it to Honda and have the ECU update?

Sorry I’m not clear on what you’ve done. You’ve replaced your egr valve and now the car isn’t starting? Was it new or used? Try blanking it again and see if it starts. If it does then your replacement is jammed open and is dud.

I haven‘t replaced the EGR, I cleaned it, I removed the blanking plate it as it was running in limp mode. I think i will have to blank it permanently and get the EGR deleted.

I did actually already suggest this, it’s based on years of experience with these engines.

Silly it may be but have u changed the glow plugs on it, mine struggles to start weather it’s cold or warm but easier when cold(which I find strange) which is annoying, so I’m changing the glow plugs as I don’t know when they where last changed along with a service, oil, filters etc..along with a egr clean see how that plays out will keep updated
