Hi All!

Not been on for a LONG time, as the Accord's moved on, but just I’ve had a mechanic friend of mine get in touch with an issue he’s trying to resolve on a Euro R Accord (’05) that he’s got in:

(The R8, is the mechanic’s – lucky sod!)

The problem – a vibration that usually, but not always, comes in when accelerating and driving from 2nd gear upwards and persists when cruising at motorway speeds, making the car quite uncomfortable for the owner. The Mechanic’s asked me to see whether anyone in the Honda community may have some advice. Hopefully, someone here may be able to ***ist/advise beyond what I’ve got already…

Notes:
  • It doesn’t always happen – sometimes the car is ok, or not as bad.
  • It’s worse going uphill, but lessens or dies away when accelerating hard, or going downhill.
  • It doesn’t happen when the engine is revved at standstill.
Thoughts. Chatting with the mechanic, we both feel it’s driveline related, focusing on the Drive Shafts/CV Joints, or possibly an engine mount, but he’s just replaced the Driver’s side shaft, with no change, and the owner has stated the Passenger side was only done recently. Looking at it, it seems a bit older than that would suggest though.

The new shaft has a degree of play in it:

and the other side (couldn’t get a video) feels about the same, maybe a bit better.

So! The Questions!
  • Is that movement in the Dvr side shaft ‘normal’?
  • Are there any other thoughts on possible causes?
  • If, as suspected, it’s driveshaft/CV joint related, where can you get Euro R shafts from (any recommended good quality suppliers?
  • Are there any good H specialists in the SW or nearby? My knowledge is very out of date!

Hopefully someone can chip in – it’s a lovely car and tempting me a lot, as the owner has hinted at maybe selling it! I still really Love these Gen 7 Accords!

PS - The front engine mount has a vacuum line tapped into it – can someone confirm whether this is designed to firm up the mount to minimise engine pitching on acceleration/braking, or what is its function? More curious than anything…

We had this on my kid brothers Euro R when he ran one and it was the near side driveshaft. From memory he managed to get one from a K24 and it was a straight fit, or one section of it was I think.

Cheers Fahad - long time no see!

Interestingly, the NS is where I felt it was coming from. Also good to know the K24 is a swap - will get digging into part numbers and see what I can find. There is several section, so I'd imagine the inner section is K20A specific.

I’m good Mike, hope you are too. It’s going back a few years and he just got lucky as we found a driveshaft pretty cheap and offered it up to see if it would fit. I don’t think you can tell from the part numbers. The important thing is to ensure it’s a genuine Honda part..

That sounds familiar! I only use OE parts now - been stung too many times with rubbish!

ref the R - both CV joints have just been ordered - I suspect that’ll sort it.

trying to avoid buying one now!! :D
