Hi im looking at buying a 04 /05 plate accord saloon either the 2.0 petrol or 2.2 diesel just wondered if anyone knew which one would be best and are there anythings i should be lloking for when going to view one and generally if they are good cars . i had been looking at german cars but parts seem so dear now adays and a mate of mine said about trying japanese cars so here i am :D .

Thanks sam

I had a 2.0 type s 2007 but have now got a diesel

For me it was the miles you get, with me doing approx 600 a week the diesel made a lot more sense but to be honest if I was only doing a limited number of miles I'd have a petrol but only because of the v-tec fun

The other thing I like with my diesel is that it is the EX model so more toys than a sport or type-s but it all comes down to personnel choice

Go to dealer and have a go in a few cars, that's what I did

I have never had a problem with a petrol Honda, diesel I've had clutch but Honda paid more than half towards it and manifold under warranty, there are threads on here as to what to look out for but for both as long as they've been looked after with history are great cars

Welcome Sam!

Petrol is more reliable than Diesel!

But as Lee has stated it all depends on mileage and your preference!

Try getting a EX spec as that comes with everything, and if you have enough in your budget try getting a facelift (2006 onwards) model.

ok cheers for your help see i do like diesel because of the torque at the moment i have a 1.9 gt tdi golf so used to a diesel but i only do around 10k a year so at that milage would you recommend the petrol? So there very well built cars then ? I just think the accord is such a nice looking car i have been looking and you cant remap the petrols can you?

Overall well built, if you mess about with them you can see the quality over say ford or French for example rubber boots on drive shafts are far better than my 2 classic Citroens and my wifes impreza.
If you're using diesel now I would defiantly have a go in both to see what you think, you'll need to work the petrol more to get it in the v-tec band to get full potential from the car but obviously diesel has more torque and is more of a cruising type of car. Lots have had maps on the diesels which I would recommend having had Faddy do a stage 2 EGR delete, it makes big difference
For the miles you do I would guess you would be filling a diesel every 2 weeks at about £75 a throw or once a week with petrol at about same cost? Mapped I'm getting between 500 and 650 miles from tank depending on roads and if I happen to see a type-r :) that's feeling frisky :)

I'd been looking at cars since the beginning of December and was originally going to get an Audi a6 diesel but I just kept coming back to looking at diesel Honda's but was very quickly put of because of warranty issues at first because I wouldn't of been able to afford one within the warranty period if something went wrong .
Another piece of advice I took from this forum was about the amount of mileage I would do in a year, I do less than 12,000 a year so it just made the diesel seem pointless for me plus I was coming from a two seater sports car with lots of power, so I went for the 2.4 type s , 4 doors , a big boot and lots of power to play with ........ only had her a week and ****** love it..

Can't see the problem with warranty as I only pay just over £200 for Honda main dealer warranty with no diagnostic fee, to me anyway seems a good deal and have had no issues with it. It was because I had a warranty Honda discounted my clutch as well, maybe different for others or other areas?

Another important note is look after your car and maintain it correctly and you should't have any real issues even with the diesel!

It is important you read through this forum thoroughly so you know how to look after whichever one you decide to get!

As everyone has said, drive one of each and then decide. You'll need to pay more for a diesel initially to ensure you get a good one, but then it will hold it's value better too.

We can tune the petrols too, but the gains are nowhere near the diesel cars. If it was just a paper decision, on 10k mile per annum, I'd say get a 2.4 Type S or Exec.

Yup, they're perfectly fine mate and have the potential to put a smile on your face when you plant your foot. I'd say if you're coming from a PD engined Golf (especially if it's tuned), then you may find it disappointing.

nah my golf isnt a pd engine its the 110 bhp and hasnt been modified would the accord seem quicker? i know u have the 0-60 times but always feels different when driving , what would you think would seem quicker?

I'd say the 110 Golf will feel quicker through the gears due to the torque. Go and drive it and decide mate.

also if i got a 2.0 vtec as you say the tuning isnt as far gains aas a diesel but apart from a remap what else could i do to it to make it a little quicker without making it too loud i dont want it to be like a boy racer car

cheers :D

Sam,,, ive come over to honda from the Volkswagon/Skoda world...after a fabia vrs then an octavia vrs (both PD),,, the biggest single difference is the engine, it truly is a marvel of engineering, so quiet and smooth compared to the tractor engines of *** cars. Plus the build quality of the car itself will surprise you, everything just works.

What I would say is be picky, there are plenty about, get one with xenons because the normal headlights are scarey. Also, a complete and comprehensive history is a must, dont be afraid to walk away from a car you like because of a lack of history, there will be another round the corner !!

I have to argue with this point, at 10k a year I imagine it's split up between days of the week, which means a large percentage of your journey every day will be on a cold engine, on a diesel this doesn't make for good economy! Also, the 2.0 petrol is quite economical, it's much better than half that of the diesel, more like 3/4 driven properly.

Only my experience but my 2.0 type-s did 270 and sometimes a bit more to a tank but diesel a lot more, I got straight onto a by pass then short 70mph road then 50mph and into work, total miles is 20. I drive normally with a bit of traffic sometimes. The type-s only had about 20k on the clock

Ok cheers for your help , ye i will wait til the right one comes up i remember my 1st car and i rushed into it and it was a pile of ***** lol, ye im def looking for full service , i am going to look at a 2.0 vtec later today just so i can have a drive and see what i think to the power, what are the accords like inside quite nice?

Personally I like them, I went back to a type-r civic after the accord type-s but missed the accord for the interior, space and believe it or not the handling.
Something else you could look at could be DC5?
Not sure if your after bigger car but I ran mine and had no issued with space running the kids about, boot is big and got 35mpg put of it going to work. People think they're small but they're bigger than civic and I got 3 sets of golf clubs in the boot :)
Cheap to buy these days

Yeah we're all different and all cars are different as well, we had a 2.0 petrol tourer and did about 35mpg usually, then got the diesel now and get around 44mpg around town, so just thought saying you'd have to fill up twice as often might be a bit misleading! I guess it's good to get everyone's experience though, and potential owners can get the final opinion from driving themselves! :D

I have a 110 TDI Passat and a 2.0 petrol Accord. I know the Passat is a heavier car than the Golf but my Honda absolutely s****s all over my Passat performance wise and is a much nicer drive. At 10k a year i would say get the petrol for the added reliability. Also the MPG is very good for a 2.0 petrol.

The 2.0 is 155 bhp so is no slouch but you do need to rev it to get the available performance.

Fuel consumption (urban) 28 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 47.9 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 38.2 mpg

These figures are for the saloon, The tourer is a heavier car so will be less economical.

Mine must have been pants on mpg then? Maybe it was me going from DC5 to 2.0 type-s having to put my foot down to get it going without realising it :)

Its no DC5 mate. You would have to thrash the nuts off it and still not get close.

It was highly tuned as well :)

I'm welling up as missing it now :-(

tell me about it. i feel the same about my old Prelude. God i loved that car. :(

This is why i'm keeping my prelude as well as my type s....... :p

Must say its tempting to buy another as the price is about a third what I paid for mine, only problem these days is insuring it as weekend toy :-( bet it's expensive

well thanks everyone for replying and helping me out , you lot seem alot more helpfull and friendlier than most other forums :D , btw i look at that accord today to see what it was like inside and they look lovely i didnt test drive because i didnt have time but did anyone know if the gear box on the manuals if the gears r close together as in likw my golf from 1st to 2nd seems a long pull down where some new cars are more short movements so didnt know if the accord was like that ? If people understand what i mean :D

Thanks Again :D
