As some of you will know I have been having a problem with a vibration between 60-70 mph under accelartion only , I first thought it was the fairly common drive shaft problem but after driving the car and taking careful note of how the car drives in all gears plus load conditions I'm leaning towards a rpm and load problem instead.

I've noticed I get this front end shudder under accelartion at about 2200-3000 rpm , it's only just noticeable in second gear and gets slightly worse as I go up through the gearbox ending up being very obvious in fith and sixth .

Is this something that anyone on here has ever heard of ? I don't think it's a missfire or engine imbalance as there's no hesitation at all but could it still be a load related drive shaft problem?

Will this little problem has just gone from strange to even stranger. When i first got the car the rumble and vibration at speed problem was already there so i swapped the front wheels to the rear which made no difference at all . I`ve also changed the front drivers side driveshaft which made the rumble a little less noticable but turned my high speed vibration in to a vibration between 2000-3000 rpm in ever gear except 1st plus it was a lot worse.

While messing around with my wheel colour today i though i would change the drive shaft back to the original one that came with the car and swap the wheels from back to front again. This is the odd bit , the vibration in every gear has gone although i`ve not been on the motorway yet to see if it still does it at 60-70 mph ( I think it will still do it at high speed ) but the rumble seems to have gone ( or i`m just getting use to it ) lol.

The question is as the car is back together the way it was in the first place what has changed to get rid of the rumble ?

I'd check it's definitely gone first mate.

Will do matey. Like I say I'm sure the vibration at 60-70mph will still be there which I can sort of live with for a while but I'm pleased that the vibration under load in every gear has gone ( the replacement drive shaft must have been in worse condition than the original that I've just refitted ). If the rumble has gone at low speed and it's not just my imagination I will be over the moon since most of my driving is done at low speed anyway.

I'll try to keep this thread updated as I go since there seems to be alot of info on these sort of noises and vibration but very few difinitive answers.

I've been out for a long drive on slow A roads and the motorway and heres the result . The rumble has indeed gone completely and isn't noticeable at any speed ( I'm only getting the normal road noise now ) which is nice . Swapping the drive shaft back to the original one has definitely got rid of the vibration in all gears ( except when driving between 60-70 while accelerating ) as I expected although the vibration is less than before. All in all that was the best drive out in the car I've had since owning it .

It still puzzles me as to why it's now much better even though I've not a fitted any new parts . Maybe it was just the tyres making the rumble in the first place and changing them from front to rear for 600 miles then back again as evened up the ware .

The only other things i have done to the car are listed below.

Remove front calipers clean up and make sure the pads are free to move .

Remove rear calipers clean up and make sure the pads are free to move.

Clean up front and rear discs removing any loose rust.

I've never owned a car that's had this sort of problem with rumbles and vibrations before . Most of the time after working my way through it I've aways managed to find out what the cause was then fix it ( but not this time as it seems to have fixed half of them itself ) lol. I know I will need to sort out the inner cv's to cure the high speed vibration at some point but to be honest I'm just pleased that the rumble has gone.

These cars only like genuine original Honda driveshafts so maybe the one you used was an aftermarket part?

It was an original one although it was used . It didn't seen to have any movement in the cv's but I think the shaft itself is bent ( I guess that's the problem with used parts nine out of ten times there come from cars that have had a fairly nasty accident ). I think I will be asking for my money back for the shaft .

sounds like you were shaft-ed.

I'll get me coat
