Having read detailed DIYs from Fahad and others, I thought I would attempt my first DIY oil change on my pre-facelift diesel. Thought I’d pass on my thanks and add a few notes for the benefit of all:

First impression – no undertray to deal with. I presume it has been damaged and left off by a previous owner. Is there any harm in it not being there?

On other cars I have successfully used a “topsider” suction pump to remove old oil through the dipstick tube. I don’t have any probs with this method as the dipstick normally sits in the deepest part of the sump, so the suction tube will capture just as much sludge as bottom draining. However, on the Accord there is a restriction near the bottom and I only managed to get 5L out this way. It was still worth doing as it takes the pressure off the drain plug and helps avoid that first hot gush of oil down the sleeve!

Took out the oil filter. Really glad for the previous DIYs because I haven’t seen anything like it before! Element and o-ring seals changed easily enough. Is it normal to have a bit of rotational play between the mounting shaft and the cap ***embly?

Went underneath and let out another 0.5 to 1L from the drain plug. Replaced the washer. Previous discussions on here have talked about whether it is supposed to be shiny side up or down. Mine (from Honda) was shiny on both sides so I lightly scratched each side so find out which was softest, then installed it soft-side to sump. No leaks.

Refitted filter, gave everything the once over and refilled with 5.5L of Exol 0w30. (Dispensed by putting the drum on a handy stack of paving slabs and tipping into a 2L jug – no tap needed if quick and confident enough!)This brought the level up to half way between min and max marks. My road isn’t quite level, so I added another 0.5L to bring to max. This morning when fully cool and on the level it’s just off the bottom of the max marking. Spot on!

Engine smoother and quieter this morning. Maybe a teeny bit quicker but not sure.

Thanks to all who have done DIYs for this. I will shortly be following your advice for cabin and air filter changes. I still think I may go to my local Honda specialist for gearbox oil and fuel filter change – more for the sake of level ramps and correct tools that anything else!

Nice one bud.

Fuel filter is a challenge but well worth the effort. The pollen filter is laughingly easy...

Excellent stuff Chris,

Glad to see your getting stuck in.

Can see where your coming from with the fuel filter, it isn't too bad really, so long as you can remove the bolts holding the bracket to the bulkhead, but equally for what the labour charge is, then is it worth the hassle. As you know from when you got the car, genuine fuel filter only is the big thing so just ensure you supply the filter.

Good stuff Chris - I would say gearbox oil is even easier than engine oil - no need to take it to a specialist.

I'll second that. The diesel gearbox oil is even easier to do. Me and Faddy did mine and it took less than 30 mins

Fahad & Shabz - how did you know that the gearbox oil was at the right level as a DIYer - doesn't the car need to be level? Or did you just add the stated amount of oil?

I usually get the front end on axle stands then jack the back up so the car is level and also pour in the correct amount and if it starts coming out stick the bung back in and dont put anymore in. It usually works out that the right amount in litres has gone in.

Chris - just put in the correct amount. It should be 2.2 litres as per the manual but when my clutch was done, Holdcroft put in 2.5 litres and said it's fine. So anywhere between 2.2 and 2.5 litres of Honda MTF3 should be fine bud.

I would be a bit wary about sucking out the oil from the dipstick tube, someone on here did this and the end of the hose broke off in the sump and he had to take the sump apart to get it out.
