Auto v Sportshift

Hi Guys Looking for a little enlightenment
When driving at a steady speed just below 60mph in auto the tacho reads 1800
if i move to sportshift the tacho jumps up to 2100 the gear shown is 5
if the gear is 5 at this speed how can it be less in auto?

maybe there's a torque lock-up which is disengaged ?

I cannot see why the lock-up should disengage unless it is a preempt to the expected moves in sportshift.
Does that mean if you run around in sportshift you incur some loss in the torque converter?

If I'm right, then yes, and it will also affect your mpg

as I am a lazy driver and use auto most of the time it is no great loss

I've got the auto as well, and change often between sport-shift and auto. Sometimes it's like the auto-mode has 6 gears instead of 5. Very strange

Hi Steven I know just what you mean, but I think Brian has the right idea with the Torque Converter lock up.
That is locked in auto and unlocked in sportshift which would allow a small percentage of slip allowing the RPM to rise.

I would think it's some type of overdrive right? Most autos have them

However Brian theory seems right too

my last car had an overdrive selected with a button on the gear shift 3ltr v6 Camry.
this is not the same I think Brian has the right idea.

My 1.8 Carlton had a "sport" button on top of the shift selector, that used to knock me down into a sharper gear useful for overtaking!! mind you did not pass much. LOL
