Hey I was just wondering have any of ye ever had this problem before.basicly when I start the car and the engine is cold it will not go over 2k revs in any gear.but once i drive it and the engine heats up a bit I can pull over turn the car off take out the key for about 10seconds and it runs like a dream then.I have changed the glow plug relay, glow plugs and the fuel filter was changed recently but none of these have sorted the problem.Think I am going to have to put it on the computer and see if any faults show up but just said I would put it up to see if anyone has ever had the same problem.

Sounds like your car is going into Limp mode. Did you use genuine Honda parts when you changed the fuel filter etc?

Does the coil light flash and throw it into limp mode? When you restart does the light go out?

As Shabz asked, did you use genuine Honda parts? That's the key here.

Yeah it was all genuine parts that were used when they were being replaced.it was happening with the old parts to so I changed all that cause I read that it could be any of them.the coil light never comes on the engine management light comes on when you start it first but then once the engine heats and you turn the car off and on it turns off again.just thinking I should bring it to a mechanic some morning when the engine light is on and hope it shows up the error.

Laurence, what is the specific error you get when the engine light is on?

This may be a long shot but may it be the MAF sensor playing up.After reading different threads like the jerking if these items are unplugged the car goes into limp mode.

I don't know what fault is showing up yet as the mechanic I go to is closed till tuesday so have to wait until then to get the proper diagnosis on it.

Certainly looks like limp mode.

There will be codes stored if the MIL light has come on, it seems the fault is either causing the MIL on shut off or start up, so certainly worth getting it scanned or investing in a code scanner.

Is the MIL light illuminated straight from start up or does it come on say 30 seconds afterwards or when you start to drive off or anything unusual like "running on" happen when switching off?

Any other issues like difficulties starting, uneven idle?

Was it a Honda dealership that did the glow plugs and fuel filter and do you know whether all codes were cleared when this work was done ?

Was there a specific reason for replacing the glow plugs and relay or was it just an attempt at resolving the issue. Also is it guaranteed to extinguish the MIL Light and run normally after stopping and restarting after 10 minutes

One thing to try today as obviously you cannot get the car in until Tuesday at the earliest is to bleed the fuel system by priming the priming bulb.
(I'm only suggesting this as you have recently had a fuel filter changed and it could be that the system still has a little bit of air in it and possibly causing a low fuel rail pressure fault, which is then cleared when you restart after driving a little while)

To do this:

1) Looking into the engine bay and standing central you should see the air filter box on your right, now head to the back of the engine and up to the bulkhead, you should see in a bracket a black rubber bulb that you can squeeze. (the location is shown in your handbook that you should have got with the car)

2) You can either undo the front part of the bracket to get better access to the priming bulb (preferred), or you can just keep pumping it until it goes solid, whilst you are there, follow the tube to the right and you should see the fuel filter, just double check that no fuel or bubbles are coming out of the connection to the filter (also just check that the filter looks nice and new!)

3) Once the priming bulb is hard, start the engine and accelerate it to around 2k and hold for 30 seconds, then let idle then repeat acceleration and hold for two more times. Check the car idles fine and then switch off.

4) Restart engine, is the MIL light on ? if so go for a small drive and come back, switch off engine and then restart, the MIL should have now gone off as previous. Leave the car to cool etc and try again later, to see if the MIL light comes back on.

Otherwise think it is best waiting for the code as it could be a number of things, which will be narrowed down significantly with the fault code that is causing the MIL to come on.

No no other issues really.the engine light stays on until it heats up and then turns off again. When the fuel filter was changed alright there was a bit of air in it but its perfect when its left idle now.Is there a way of bringing up the codes without the computer cause I think it was the ek civic you could cross the two pins on the ecu and the engine light would flash so you would count the flashes and that would be the code?

MIght as well get yourself a cheap OBD reader...one off payment stops having to give garages £/€'s for 30 seconds work..

Yep got mine on the Elite deal,

Went for the MS509, really easy to use, (but you need to read the manual first just to prevent any miss understandings or thinking what does that do and then wishing you hadn't!)

As Dan has said you pick them up cheap £50 to £60 should easily get you one, which is quite often less than one diagnostic, HOWEVER of course it is what you do with the knowledge some things are simple to rectify and therefore save yourself some money, others are not so easy hence why a trained Honda technician is generally the best bet.

Finally got the obd code for the engine fault its 173-4 (glow plug circuit malfunction).I dont know how it is this though as the glow plug relay and glow plugs have been changed recently.any idea's????thanks in advance again

I hooked up an obd to my car and got fault code 173-4 glow plug circuit malfunction.only thing is that both the glow plugs and glow plug relay was changed recently an both got off the honda dealer.any help would be greatly appreciated

Still having the problem.the turbo still wont kick in when the car is cold.any help would be greatly appreciated

Would of been better to bump this thread you already started, gives some background onit.

Basicly when the engine is cold it will not go over 2k revs.but when it heats up and i turn it off for a few seconds and back on its grand.it has been a fault since I got the car but I have changed the glow plugs, glow plug relay and fuel filter.all have been gotten off a honda dealer.still no joy so I got an obd and checked the fault code and it came up 173-4 glow plug circuit malfunction.thats the only code that came up but dont know what else I can do.cheers for the help

It may well be a damaged ecu, like on civics a spike from frozen wipers or any power surge ( changing glow plugs grounding to engine) will cause damage to the ecu throw up random codes. Just speculating.

worth checking with your dealer if the accord suffers from the same power surge problem that kills civic ecu's, I dont think any have been reported on here though.

Paul you have this recently? Do you have the flashing glow plug too? If so, fuel filter and use a genuine item

no flashing just eml light limp mode same code as hutch
its another accord not mine did a diagnostic on it have posted in diesel faults
