7th Gen Diesel
Hi Guys,

This is a great resource. Thanks for doing it :)

Ok so I haver a 7th Gen diesel with 290,000 miles - yes you've read it correctly :) Love this car.

So there's a noise coming from engine which sounds like timing chain issue etc.

However it isn't really there when running cold and sometimes it's far less pronounced when running hot. Also seems to be distinctly in the area of all the pulleys - although it isn't an issue with any of them.

I'm presuming it's a chain issue but seems odd to not have a constant rattle!! You would think it would't matter - once it's worn it's worn right? What difference should the temp make etc... Noise comes and goes to varying degrees and is never loud on start.

Chain and injectors etc. all done at 115000 by Honda under the revised warranty that covered fault in this area.Always serviced with correct oil at 5000.

This is a 2004

Anyway any opinions are always valued.

And yes - I'm keeping the car :)

impressive mileage

there is a tensioner that takes up the slack in the chain, check if the tensioner is near the extent of its travel, if it is then the engine needs a new chain 2nd time round.

btw good policy there too in using the correct oil every 5k miles, but even then, chains still stretch over time

Could be alternator? I ***ume the car has had the revised aux belt routing etc?
As said - impressive mileage :) Hope mine can live that long - lol

Instead of wondering if it's chain or any pulley noise, the easiest way is to remove the belt and listen if noise disappears.

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all for getting back.

Yes we've loosened the belt and noise is still there.I wouldn't know enough about these things so here comes a silly question - Could the noise still be coming from any area related to the alternator , even with the belt loose?

I never did any alternative routing of the belt and then I saw a clip on youtube about just that topic and the thing is that the noise coming from his belt area seems the same as mine.

Now I'm confused.

Or maybe I just can't deal with the truth - that I need to fix chain. The truth hurts too much :)

Thanks all...

I'm not sure what you mean by "loosened the belt", it's best to remove the belt completely then run the engine for no more than a couple of minutes. If the noise is still there, then it's the chain.

I suggested the same in post #4. I don't know what is "loosened" as well...

Yep you did, it's a bit like "Have I Got News For You" where Ian Hislop gets the points even though Paul Merton was first to give the right answer LOL
