Hi all,

Well driving home last night, everything going fine then I heard a bang from the engine.

Car limped last 5 mins home and when I got parked and popped the bonnet, saw a fuel injector had shot out of the engine, and even cracked the plastic engine cover.

So my baby is off with mechanic. he said the threads are wrung for the injector, and he may try tapping it with a larger thread.

Bad times.... I hope I dont need to replace the injectors and head cos thats a damage to the wallet I dont need.

Anyone else have this issue?

Matt

i would suggest that injector has been removed for some reason previously. whoever re-fitted it has no doubt crossed the threads on the clamp bolt and not tightened it fully. you may need to fit a bigger bolt and this involves having a machinist drill out the hardened metal clamp and then drill and retap the head for an 8mm thread instead of 6mm. get a good garage look at it.

Its with a good independent mechanic at the moment, and i think he mention a fix similar to what you mentioned.

I hope this doesnt cost too much. Is it a big job to fix?

Wow!! first time i've seen this...

yea, when I looked under the engine, the near side injector was a few inches out of the engine, and the plastic engine cover was cracked and split a few inches.

From memory, my car had the injectors reconditioned a few years ago due to dirty diesel, so like beefy said, it must not have been fitted 100%.

I hope this doesnt cost much as it will be eating into my budget for my Stage 1 remap and getting tanna's front splitter off him.

well update today:

my mechanic has said that someone has previously tapped the injector and fitted it, but it must not have been fitted 100% correctly which means that my mechanic doesnt have the tools to do the work himself so ive to send the car to a diesel injector specialist so off it went on the back of a lorry.

hope they sort it you out so ure not out of pocket too much buddy. looks like whoever re-con'd ure injectors did a bang on job!

well so far im out 140 euro on towing costs alone. hope this company can do a good fix.

there doesnt seem to be many mechanics out there that want to work on tapping and fitting injectors.

Matt have a look hear.

Cheers, took a read of that. Not the exact same issue but similar.

I rang the specialist that I sent the car too, and guy said there having a bit of bother getting the injector to stayed fixed in as it had been tapped out previously.

Ive to ring back this afternoon to see what the status of the car is. :(

Any more word from the specialist?

Yes, They said they were able to tap the heads with new threads and the injector itself isnt damaged so they should have the injector back in and seated correctly today.

OK,

Picked up the car last night and the cost wasnt bad so happy enough.

Drove the 30mins to my house with window partially open to hear the engine. All sounds OK and no chuffing of blow by on the injector but ill get the car serviced in a few weeks and have them just spot check the injectors for me.

Well time to update this thread.

Over the last few weeks, ive noted a chuffing sound from the engine which I presume is the previously refitted injector that had to be tapped to set.

So the question now is can a mechanic refit the injector after it has been re-threaded and reseated or is this where I have to start replacing big parts of the engine?

Got the car looked at by injector specialists. Turns out the injector just got a bit loose and damaged the cap nut. Mechanic replaced the cap nut and retightened.

Everything seems fine and did some long miles on it. However day or two later Engine warning light came on and engine went into limp mode. Switched it off and left it a few mins and when I restarted all was fine and car running at normal speeds.

Hopefully this will be it all sorted and I can finally get around to a Stage 1 remap

Hey all,

Well back to the old story again. The injector that was "fixed" last Oct has blow by AGAIN and this is doing my head in. It was fixed my a diesel injector specialist the last time and if they cant fix the issue what else can I do.

Its getting to the point im thinking of getting rid of the car completely and getting something else.

the injector seat needs to be re cut and a slightly deeper brash washer needs to be used.

Would a diesel engineering company not know to do this? Any recommendiations for someone in Ireland to do this, would a Honda Garage cost a fortune?

if you want to keep the car then i would advise the following:

1) take the engine to a decent engineering company who would be able to re cut the seat for the injector (hopefully leaving the cover on the engine) .... we are talking like 1/2 - 1mm cut
2) get the hole for the securing bolt helicoiled
3) get a new brass washer (ensure its the standard thickness + what ever the engineering company cut out.
4) get the injector cleaned in an ultra sonic bath
5) refit injector properly taking your time to get it sat on the seat properly

it should cost you no more than about £100 to do.

Sorry cant help for advice with the garage though dont live in NI
