Faulty timing chain - advice needed!

something we having bashing our heads against walls over for a while now. thankfully they're not all bad.

Hi Rimas,

Sorry to hear of your predicament, I hope you get it sorted quickly. Can you describe what the chain sounds like, is it ony at tick over you hear it.

I have had my i CDTi serviced at the same Honda main dealer since new (Sept 2007) and they always use fully synthetic Shell 5-30w Ultra oil, I have questioned this a couple of times and they ***ure me that it is recommended by Honda UK for all their diesel engines! I have now done 91,000 miles.

Cheers

John

Hi John, I'll try to post a video of it tonight, I'm interested to see what others think. The local dealer described it as a "slight rattle", but I can't comment on that as I'm not sure what i-CTDI engine should ideally sound like.

Guys 5w/30 is acceptable but it's not 'recommended' by Honda.

The only Recommended Oil is 0w/30

In my opinion, using 5w/30 but ensuring regular oil changes of around 8k will be fine on an ICTDI. But when you can buy 0w/30 25l @ around £90... what's the point of using 5w/30?

Hi Fahad, what I find a BIT annoying in my situation is that before going to buy the car, I phoned my local Honda dealer and asked them to check the history of this particular car and if there are any concerns that I should be aware of, to which they replied that everything seems to be fine. The fact that I didn't check the service book as well as I should have done myself before buying the car is another thing...

This happened to me as well and I bought mine from Holdcroft Honda. I was told the vehicle had full service history but on checking the book after getting home there's a full service missing. Two years between services. They checked their computer but couldn't find anything. It may have been serviced but who knows?

I had concerns about ratling chain in my car so when I visit HH next time will ask them about it.
I am not sure about services and intervals before me,but I always change oil after 7k and use only 0w30 and use only genuine oil filter.
But engine still noisy

I've just recorded a video of the engine working at idle speed using a digital camera, have a listen below:

The engine sounds a bit more high pitched in the video than it does in reality.

Please let me know how bad you think it sounds compared to what it should be.

Cheers
Rimas

Hmmm doesn't sound no different to mine! Still need to get to the bottom of the noise mine makes.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update - I've been to HH this morning and the lads there have confirmed the fault with the timing chain.

Not only that, but the exhaust manifold is also cracked...I personally couldn't smell any fumes in the cabin, but I'm happy to get it replaced for free anyway :)

Hopefully I'll get the estimate prepared by them tomorrow (for timing chain bits) and get the problems fixed later in the week.

So far the HH experience is very positive, just as I've expected after reading the comments on this forum ;)

Cheers!

Regardless of whether its 5w-30 or 0w-30, if its semi-synthetic that the dealers have been using then personally I think 12k is far to much on semi. I used to go by the old guidelines - full mineral every 3k, semi every 6k and fully sythnetic 12k. With the discounted oil from exol I'm perfectly happy changing every 6k for fully sythetic :)

Unfortunately when people (including dealers) see 12k service intervals, they somehow seem to think this applies to every type and grade of oil...

After reading this, i've had my honda checked at huddersfield honda. They said that the timing chain and manifold need doing.

They then asked me to bring in my service book, which i did and was told i need to pay £72 for the diagnosis. Ffs, nobody else mentioned it before and the guy spent no longer than 5 minutes checking it.

I'll find out later if they'll do it. Luckily i read this thread in time as my car was registered on 1 st of july 04!!!

Apart from the noise (supposedly caused by a bearing, right?), does anyone know about any case of an i-ctdi engine blowing up because of this problem (ie: chain snaping or geting out of place)?

Did you speak with Paul the service manager regarding the diagnosis costs. Of they only spent 5 minutes and insist on charging you they should charge a pro-rata hourly rate in my opinion.

Agree Bobby, but the receptionist insisted that this is common practice. Anyway, if my car gets properley sorted, then its no bother.

Does anyone know if this issue could affect oil consumption or smoke on startup?

Nuno, I think meaty Chi had to have a new engine because of TC issues.. could be wrong though. If a chain is noisy - there is a problem brewing.

Yep, of course no one want to risk a possible costly repair, but just checking if there were any cases of serious problems due to the chain. Thanks.

Yeah pretty certain there have been a couple.

As I understand the facelift models do not qualify for the timing chain under extended warranty - How much are the dealers charging for a new chain?

I must post a video of my engine noise - I think mine might need the chain changed and/or alternator clutch/bearing

Hi Chaps,
Could you look at my video please. (54 plate - now done 196K) 2.2 diesel

I think my chain may be on way out - the car is really noisy - more so when idling, the noise goes when accelerating.

I know about the extended warranty thing - but the mileage takes me way over!

Does it seem like the chain to you making the noise - or could it be something else??

It drives ok but will it do damage to continue using it and if it is the chain - what are the expected costs to replace??

This is the last thing I could do with at the moment - so any help is appreciated.

Cheers
Carl

Bump - if anyone could advise me about this I'd be greatly appreciated - I have a 200 mile round trip tomorrow and would prefer no to do it in my wifes Ford KA!!!

Thanks!

Having scanned around in here, think my problem could also be alternator clutch related?? Would appreciate if you could help me with your opinions after viewing the video, the noise does seem to come from the front of the car , more from the oil filter area (you should be able to see/hear this as I move the cam around.

I basically need to know if this will damage anything if I am to drive?

Hi mate it does sound like alternator clutch, eventually it will pack in I believe they sieze up which then means it'll destroy the alternator belt. When I bought my car it was already making that noise and i've done a good 5k miles before changing it so how long they last when they start getting noisy I dont know.

I doubt that it is the clutch, given the sound you are focusing upon is at the wrong side of the engine.
Does the sound alter is you press the clutch pedal?

I would then suggest that you remove the alternator drive belt and run the engine again.
If the noise has disappeared then check the components no longer being driven - alternator, power steering pump, ac pump

If the noise continues it would seem to indicate a problem in the timing chain area, could you use a stethoscope to pin point where the noise is emanating from?
Other than that I am not sure what options exist beyond stripping the covers off to ***ess cause

Can any one tell me if it's simple for Honda to check visually if the chain has a problem? Or they have to take the "car apart"?
I think I'm going to take the car for them to have a look, but I don't want to pay a lot just for the checking.

I would have thought the simplest check for them would be whether it is making a noise or not.

When they checked mine the mechanic just went out and had a listen to it, think he gave it a good rev as well, he was only in the car 2mins at the most. Didn't charge me anything. I would check with the dealer first though.

Just reporting back on my noise, I was a bit low on oil, just below min, topped it up and noise went away (coincidence)??. No noises for 4 days the suddenly got yellow triangle warning and avs ( apologies if this is wrong but light to right of yellow triangle ) light, which went back off upon retstart. All ok for a few days then same rattling noise yesterday morn, all ok after a restart???

Car has done nearly 198k 54, so wander what ***ociated costs would be for things like timing chain, alt clutch etc etc, or do I accept that the car needs to goto the scrapyard in the sky??!

Hi guys,

My car is now sorted!!

HH have replaced the timing chain kit, installed a new manifold and because the gearbox had to be taken off to do this work, I also opted to have the clutch replaced (for a VERY reasonable price), as apparently it only had about 3 - 5K of life left in it. I also had the car serviced; from now on I'll change the oil every 6 to 8K and use the correct 0W30 stuff, might get the 25L of Lubetech, as the price is so cheap.

Because of the late servicing that the car had in the past (see my earlier posts), I also asked HH to check the compression in the cylinders as well as the oil pressure, and all the readings came back well within the tolerance - I'm well chuffed with that, as I was a bit worried about the potential damage.

The car felt like new when driving back from Stoke to Brum this morning!

I'm very pleased with the service at HH, not to mentioned the TA discount as well :)

P.S. I've also picked up a set front brake discs and pads from them as well, I'll try and fit them myself - never done it before, but looking at the DYI guide on this forum, it doesn't look that difficult ;)
