So i popped out to the shop in my 2004 tourer accord on thursday. I noticed it was a little difficult to get into second. On the way home their was an almighty bang and the gear stick jumped out of position. Then I heard the whining niose of a dead gearbox. I called Honda and they told me to get it taken to Swanway Rochdale. Then I recieved a phonecall to say it was going to cost £90 to diagnose the problem (although it was quite obvious!). They I got a call from the servicing team telling me it was the gearbox and it would cost me £6,500 to fix... I bought the car from Leeds Honda last year and still have 2 months warrenty left. When I explained this on the phone I was told to bring in my cars service history but when I asked the service guy if it was likely to be fixed by Honda he told me it was highly unlikely. Surely as an approved honda with the happiness warrenty it should be covered?

Just want some advice really! Are they trying to just get out of the repair or is the gear box not covered by the warrenty? The reason I bought from them was exactly incase of something like this happening.

Oh and to top it off my missus is due to give birth in 4 weeks so to timing is brilliant.

I would source a 2nd had box if your warranty does not cover it.

im not sure if the 5speed / 6 speed box is the same but it might be worth upgrading whilst your at it

The warranty might only be with the selling dealer, I'm not exaclty sure how the Honda happyness thing works, but if it were me, I'd have brought the car back to were it was bought, and argue the point with them

Ring the dealer you bought the car from. They maybe able to help you

and thirdly you can get a 2004 honda accord for around 3k so that figure is pie in the sky.

Have you recently or ever checked the MTF fluid?

I had a clutch done last year and the garage never topped up the fluid, a month later while doing another job a different garage brought it to me attention and put fluid into it.

you can never be too careful with maintenance.

As already said, contact the dealer you bought it from. Also contact Honda UK if the dealer is avoiding their responsibilities. If they won't honour the warranty, then get advice from Citizen's Advice Bureau and/or trading standards... do not let the dealer/Honda off the hook! Are you a member of a motoring organisation that provides legal cover (or does your car insurance / breakdown recovery offer this)?

Interesting this one. The gear box, as Eric says, has a very strong track record. I'm not sure I've read of any 7th gen gear boxes going pop on this forum, even some of the 200K club among the diesel owners are still rolling fine.

I wonder what could have caused it to fail so suddenly and without warning? ***uming there was nothing leading up to this (odd noises, vibrations etc)?

thats why i said about transmission fluid.. a car needs servicing, even a honda. This was a year old. until we find out some more about it and whether it had a recent services its all speculation at this point

TBH yours is the first 7th gen gearbox fail I have heard of.

Worst case if Honda does not cover the cost I would consider a good second hand gearbox or even reconditoning yours. I'm sure it will be far less cheaper to do that. A new gearbox from Honda out of your pocket is defo not worth it

Thanks for all the responses people.

I am having an absolute nightmare here. First I received a call can we diagnose the problem you could be liable to £90.... shortly after this I went into the dealership. They told me that they wanted to strip the gearbox to see exactly what has gone wrong, if it was mechanical they would bill Honda and fix the gear box. But if it was wear and tear then I would have to pay approx £250 for the stripping and £90 for the diagnostic. Fair to say I had a rant and told them whats the point of buying an approved Honda with a years warranty if its no use. Then then explained that they wanted to see all my service history which I have with it being an approved Honda so I took it in. I received a phone call today (whilst in hospital with the pregnant wife I am having the worst week possible) to say they had found a used gear box and they were willing to fit it for a grandsum of £900. The service person I have been dealing with said and i quote "I have never seen anything like this the the whole gear box is shot and casing smashed to pieces!"

When asked why its not covered he said the warranty people have said their is a problem with your service history!!! Surely it cannot be an "approved Honda" if all the service history is not in check? also surely it cannot be sold without a service to some standard.

I am so annoyed with the way I have been treated I know its a used car and cost £4,300 so they have no interest, but this is really beginning to take the pee.

Has anyone any ideas where to go from here? I plan to contact the warranty people tomorrow and go mad....

Ok after a lot of phone calls I am still non the wiser. The problem appears with the fact that I have had the car serviced at an independent dealers that is how they are trying to avoid covering the warranty. So then I have spoken to the consumer rights people over the past two days and he has advised me that because of block exemption you can get your car serviced at any independent garage that is VAT registered and uses parts of the same standard. I have again called Honda Warranty back and they have dismissed this because its a guarantee not a warranty so again I have called consumer rights back. They told me thats a load of rubbish but ultimately this could go to small claims and this decision would be down to a judge! They also told me that under the 1979 sales of goods act I should be able to get it fixed however taking into account age and millage I may have to contribute. I am throughly peed off. I am now waiting from the development manager to contact the franchise and come to some kind of agreement then inform me.

To top this off my wife is ill and having to go to hospital everyday (serious pregnancy issues) and I dont have a car. I asked Honda Rochdale if they could extend the time on the hire car they had provided whilst mine was being fixed and they refused..... Honestly if I spoke to people and acted in the way these people have to me I would get sacked.

I have written a 3 page letter slating the service and people involved and I intend to email bomb it to every Honda email I can find once this has been resolved.

1,2,3... and breath

and back to the question of when you actually bought this car? and how many services you have had since owned it, and if it had a detailed service history.

only reason i am asking as a fubared gear box is the most unlikely of events, especially on a honda accord

It does sound like the fluid has maybe leaked and caused damaged to the gearbox. Thats the only thing I can see why it would of failed. Like the guys have said a very rare occurence.

TBH worst case get a second hand gearbox and get that fitted. Make sure its a good one but generally we have no issues with the gearboxes.

either way it would cost up to a grand or more to do a second hand box with labor etc.

until we are told its service status we are clutching straws, if it was leaking oil which seems unlikely the driver should have spotted this and have the problem fixed before it got worse. something not right here

More info is needed really. Again keep pushing for Honda to replace. It could maybe be a leaking driveshaft seal which could be leaking over time. Hard to spot this however it would of been picked up in an MOT. Anyone not looking under the bonnet reguarly may miss this type of leak. I've had cars where oil has leaked from the driveshaft seal but no obvious puddle under the car.
Keep us updated and good luck

Hi guys,

sorry the past week has been crazy after posting on here my missus got quite ill, the up shot is I am a dad! 4 weeks early. Been in and out of hospital quite alot as the baby is in intensive care but is doing well and getting better daily! phew....

Right the millage on the car was 92k when I bout it I ahve it serviced at 101k but from an independent dealer. They would not accept this as it was not Honda approved. I called citizens advice they said I could take them to small claims court (quote block exemption etc...) but given the age and millage I might have to contribute to the cost of a new gearbox (ie the 6.5k) with this is mind and the past weeks chaos I have bit the bullet and paid the £900. I pick the car up at 3.

Thanks for all the input and advice and I have tried everything. The customer service has been shocking as no one has seemed to know what the general proceedings and protocol seems to be. I know I paid over the odds for the car but the reason for this was the warranty.... in Hindsight I shouldve just gone and bought a car private.

Lee congrats on the new arrival, I hope baby and mother are doing better. Hope the baby is out of ICU very soon.

I think you did right with the gearbox with all the stuff going on in your life
