Gearbox replacement question (MK8 and MK7 compatibility)

Hi guys, sorry if this is a daft question.

The gearbox has just gone on my 2006 MK7 at 238k - specifically the gearbox mount not getting replaced when it should has taken out the carrier bearing in the diff (my suspicion) and now the inboard joint wobbles.

I've used the shop manual to get everything out of the way and the engine is ready to hoist out.

My question is, can I swap in a box from the 2008 MK8 (MOJ7)? If not, can I swap in a BWG6 in place of my current AWD6? I've also seen a couple advertised as 5 speed with AWD6 as the model, so I ***ume that 6 in the model code doesn't mean 6 speeds.

Anything really critical I should be doing whilst the engine is out?

Please do not tell me to scrap it, I will not listen to logic and reason
Thanks
Alex

Might seem obvious, but replacing the timing chain and ***ociated hard to get to bits is way easier while the engine is out.

If the Mk8 box fits it might open a few other possibilities, such as retrofitting the Mk7 diesel with an automatic, or fitting an entire Mk8 engine and gearbox into a Mk7. I've seen some odd transplants over time (K24's fitted to things like Minis) and mostly they involve body modifications (mounts), custom flywheels, custom driveshafts, and engineering certificates.

Went with OEM box and clutch in the end
