After having the airbox off I noticed that the air filter, which was change a few months ago during a service, is red / pink. I think this means its an aftermarket filter. I've read alot on here about using genuine parts and wondered if it would be worth swapping to the genuine Honda filter or not.

I also need to change the pollen filter, I guess that doesn't really matter if I buy a cheapo one?

I think with air filters it depends a lot on who made the aftermarket one. If it's a Halfrauds chav special it will claim to give you more power (which just means more noise) and it does it by not actually filtering properly, so you get loads of larger particles in your engine. If it's a regular blueprint copy part I don't think it's as important as the oil and fuel filters.

With diesels it really makes naff all difference performance wise. OEM is not much more than aftermarket, so you might as well stick with Honda... that reminds me - check out thje Pipercross thread...

Yep always stick with OEM if possible it makes sense.

I've had a look at the pipe cross but decided against it. I'm not fussed about perfromance, since it won't make ****** all difference anyway, but am more interested in looking after the engine. Will the newish aftermarket one I have in be as good as a Honda one....I guess thats a hard one to say

As I said I think it depends on the maker of the aftermarket one. Try to search for some aftermarket filters for your car and match up the colour and style from pics?

Just stick with a genuine Honda air filter. Some tests on the Civinfo forum by one of their more clued up members determined that none of the aftermarket stuff was better than the stock Honda filter.
