Hi Forum

On cold starts I'm getting a grinding sound as soon as my engine fires up, I'm guessing it's my starter motor on the way out, any ideas fellas? cheers

What car, year, model etc?

What sort of a grinding, and how long does it last.. come on, a bit more info would be helpful.

It's a 2003 2.0 Accord (auto). The noise is very brief lasting no longer than a second, it happens as soon as the engine fires just after I've let go of the key, actually the noise is as you'd expect if turning starter on an already running engine.

Starter motor sticking.

Nothing to be concerned about, my civic used to do it from time to time, its worse in the winter too.

Don't worry about it though

Yep sounds like a sticking starter motor. Keep an eye on it, it could last for years before seizing, although it could happen sooner.

I was thinking maybe drop the starter motor and give the mechanism a clean and greasing, are they simple to get out?

On the K20 they're on the front of the block and you'll need to remove the inlet manifold. I had mine done on the wife's FRV (same engine).

I'd just change it, easy to do, took about 30 mins in total on my 2.4.

I've got this very same issue!

It's done it a couple of times now, only when cold, normally when leaving the house at stupid o'clock in the morning...

Good to know it could be a while before it fails completely!!

I had the same issue, removed the starter, had it refurbished and much improved. As said it sits under the manifold so a bit of a pain to get too.

good to hear Ben - Did you get it refurbished in glasgow somewhere? If so, whereabouts?

Cheers,
Matt

Cheers Ben. Found a place not far from where I live in Paisley, so dropped the starter off to them this morning. Hopefully get it back for fitting on Saturday morning!
