2007 Accord CTDi

I have a 2007 Accord CTDi and an intermittent issue has developed with the headlights. Recently when driving at night I notice that when I go from high beam back to dipped beam the high beam stayed on. I have to flick the high beam on/off switch to get them to go off. The high beam light in the dash goes on and off correctly. Tonight the high beam wouldn't go off at all. I turned off all the lights, turned off the engine and still they stayed on. All dash lights and other lights went off and on correctly. Eventually from flicking the switch on and off they went off. Is the issue a relay or what? I have standard headlights and bulbs. Could someone point me in the right direction in relation to this. Thanks.
 
I would say sticking relay or possibly bad stalk
 
I have fitted a brand new stalk and this hasn't fixed the issue. Where is the relay located for the headlights?

I discovered that when high beam stays on and I tap the fuse box under the bonnet they go off. Is the relay part of a sealed unit or what. I can hear it clicking in the section next to the fuse box cover. It doesn't look accessible or am I wrong?

my car is the 2.4 petrol version which is quite different under the bonnet. The diesel engine takes a lot more space so some of the relays are scattered about in little plastic boxes in the engine compartment of the diesel version. So you're probably right.
 
I have pulled out all the relays in the main fuse box under the bonnet and I can still hear a relay clicking when I turn on high beam. I have also tried the relays in the smaller under bonnet boxes next to the main fuse box. I can't figure out where this relay is though.
 
the circuit diagram shows that the (non HID) headlight relays are inside the "relay control module"

the "relay control module" is the big plastic box next to the main fuse box in the engine coompartment

you get to the inside of the "relay control module" from underneath the main fuse box (remove battery -ve, then undo screws A & B, lift the whole unit and release the lower cover, loads of plugs for harness as shown)

from the Honda parts diagrams it looks like there s no part number for the relays inside the "relay control module"

Hi, is there a conclusion to this story:I have a similar issue and am wondering which of the relays to replace - 18 and/or 20? ...or something else?

Any help appreciated please...
 
To answer my own question and to hopefully help others, I found that replacement of the main fuse box with one from a scrap yard cured the problem.
 
You replaced the whole box? Did you not check and replace the individual relay?
 
The relay in the 'Relay Control Box' is not readily accessible and probably not replaceable (otherwise I can't imagine why it would have been designed so badly).

Disconnecting the wires on the underside of the box for a straight swop is fiddly but ok. Once the box was out I found that getting the back off it to explore was akin to cracking a safe.... I was impressed how much the plastic would bend whilst being unsuccessfully prised apart! I could have carried on but didn't want to waste time and/or be without use of the car.

Even if I could have replaced the offending relay, £30 for a replacement box from a car that had done half of my (200k) mileage should last up to 300k. Meanwhile, I've gained a whole set of replacement fuses and (top-accessed) relays.... ironically none of these have gone wrong for me in 10 years of ownership ;-)
 
Make sense the relay would have been about 30 from dealer anyway

... if you could get 'the relay' which I couldn't; the issue was that the 'inner relay' meant that a new box would be needed which is £mega new.
Still working fine and hope it helps others...
