I-CDTI 2004
Hi guys,

I've got this really sinking feeling..... 2005 accord I-CDTI, 131187 miles, (over) serviced every 6500 miles with appropriate high quality oil etc. Mostly used for longer distance commuting.

Washed her yesterday, did check oil and was all ok.
Going to work this morning: 3 miles from home the oil light went on and 2 seconds later the engine cut out!

What could it be???? I'm waiting to be recovered to Honda Doncaster but ..... Any pointers or any threads would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Bert

Oil pump chain.. Hopefully not

Honda recommend on changing the timing chain tensioner once tensioner has gone so far, also the common failure for timing chain Is due to oil sludge by use of poor oil during lifetime of engine, dealers mostly use cheap oil which can wear out chain. My accord was serviced by dealer and was running mineral oil when I purchased, I flushed twice with mineral oil and new oil filter and then moved to fully synthetic 0W30 know when I remove dipstick I have clean brown oil as opposed to black.

Thanks for your post...

I had oil + filter every 6500 miles : fully synth 0W30, so I'd rule that out. However, still waiting to hear from Honda what the damage is. ( although I think it is terminal)

Cheers,

Bert

I'll try this time not to double post! : really don't know what happened there.

I received an update via the dealership: the chain driving the oil pump has snapped. Without further investigation, it is difficult to determine what further damage is done. Another 2-4 hours investigating @ £70 per hour will give us further info. We do also need a new cam chain, cam shaft sensor, and at this stage we don't know whether the engine is damaged, necessitating a new engine......

So.... I need to understand a bit more what is what before I'm going to make an informed decision....

Kind regards,

Bert

If they have already discovered that the oil chain is broken then they should also have discovered if that caused the cam chain to break, so I don't understand "Another 2-4 hours investigating @ £70 per hour will give us further info" ....unless they mean "yes the oil chain broke which then broke the cam chain, and without charging you loads of money we can only be 90% sure that that bent some of the valves"

Oil pump chain snapping can smash through the sump, seen that a few times. So that's possibly why they were quick to diagnose that. They may want to remove timing chain cover to investigate hence the extra labour. But I don't get why they say you need a new camshaft sensor at this stage.

surely it doesn't take 2-4 hours to remove the timing chain cover, and can't they tell by just removing the tensioner cover ?

I'm only guessing why they are trying to justify their time. To remove cover will take time as rocker cover has to come off which means injectors will need to be removed.

I have written to Honda UK and communicated with the dealership. Matt from Holdcroft was also very helpful indeed to make me understand the situation.

Thing is: whilst a new engine is always an option, I would be willing to pay a mechanic who has experience changing this some damn good cash to have the cam and oil pump chain changed, as what goodluckmonkey described in his write up. The engine cut out immediately, so the chances of the swarf running riot in the engine would be minimal?

In fact, I am relating to the fact that the car is virtually a scrapper, but I am also willing to throw a good few hundred pounds to it to open it up and photograph the situation, for further educational purposes?

What would people think?
Is anyone interested in earning themselves a family holiday: we have a double garage available, engine hoist, the whole nine yards and I'll get all the parts and tools, just in case?

Cheers,

Bert

Sooo, as an update, after complaining to Honda UK and talking to the dealer, I had the car recovered to an independant specialist in Yorkshire. I paid for the engine to be partially stripped and lo and behold: timing chain completely desintegrated and it destryed the engine....

I was adviced to look for another engine alltogether and have that tested and fitted....

Anyone has one for sale perchance.... Looking on Ebay and Breakerlink.... I am not particularly hot about buying an engine that I cant hear running but hey.

Cheers,

Bert

This happened to me last year. In the end I got a new engine for it at a cost of £550 with only 72k on clock. I purchased it through breaker link and the garage send me a video of the engine running and what vehicle it was out of. It came from a 2006 frv.

I did spend £650 rebuilding the damaged engine first but it didn't fire up as piston rings were damaged due to chain snapping. I did all the work myself. Had engine out within a couple of hours. Took about 2 days to refit as I took time as I needed to use car to travel to work.
