My Accord Tourer 2.2 Diesel has got 160k on the clock and I love it! HOWEVER, one big annoying problem is as follows......Pretty much every trip, in 2nd gear upwards, putting my foot down is met with .....Nothing! Lifting the accelerator pedal on and off a few times sorts it - it takes off like a rocket with a cloud of black smoke. Also sounds like it's 'pinking' (top end tapping) when this happens.
Usual story - local garage can't find it. I've run injector cleaner thru it, changed the fuel filter.
Really need to sort it as it's spoiling a great car! Can't overtake anything much these days - too dangerous!!
PLEASE HELP! The Mrs is on about selling it!!! :( :( Where do I start???

Do you have any diagnostic errors? Where are
You located?

Hi! No stored faults according to the garage. I'm in Shrewsbury (Midlands). Car's been doing this for quite a few months now. Starts fine....

Most likely causes in my opinion based on what you've said and in the order I would do them:

Blocked or non standard Honda genuine fuel filter
Sticking egr valve
Intake manifold runner control solenoid
Sticking turbo
Possible faulty accelerator pedal position sensor

Try temporarily blanking the egr valve at the inlet manifold side and see if it solves it. It will throw up a warning light but you can clear this off later.

If it solves it then book it in with me for an egr off blanking and map.

Thank you for reply. Is it that sensitive to a non original fuel filter? I'm almost certain that it wont be a genuine one fitted so it will be a good place to start.
Will certainly try blanking off the egr.....sorry for sounding like a numbty, but could you upload a pic of whereabouts it is?
Very happy to book it in if it works! If not successful - would you be able to test the other possible causes you have listed?
Do I need to bring the car to you or are you mobile? No mad rush - I can wait till you are down this way.....
Anyway thanks for now - can't wait to try it! Will keep you updated :)

Yes it's very sensitive to non genuine fuel filters.

Do that first and see if it solves it

Ordered one! Genuine Honda. Will be a week before it gets fitted tho as I am away from tomorrow. Will post the results as soon as I know. Thanks for now Fahad! ;)

No problem. I'm sure that will solve it. Make sure it's properly bled once fitted

Hi I am getting almost same thing with my cdti.Put it into 2nd gear and it seems to just hang there for a few seconds before it gets going again.ive recently had fuel filter done tho at 146k now on 151k

GUTTED!!! Genuine fuel filter fitted yesterday - No difference! :( . HELP!!!!!!............. :( :( :(

Needs some proper diagnostics then mate. Most likely either a bad turbo or sticking egr valve

Hi Fahad! Yep - looks that way!! Can you help? Car is really only free at weekends - the Missus uses it for work Mon - Fri. Would much appreciate a look if possible!! ;) You down this way anytime??

Update.....EGR blanked and remapped by Fahad. Now just need to shift 160k miles worth of recycled exhaust grot that is wedged in my intake manifold! Hopefully it should be able to breathe a lot better then. Gasket ordered, 2 tins of soot shifter and a selection of wire brush weapons purchased. Bring it on!!

Do try the terra clean also Ian.. Keep us posted

Have you also bled the fuel filter via the M6 bolt (10mm head) on the top?

Er no! New (OE) filter has just been fitted tho. I'm guesssing you undo the bolt and wait for a constant fuel flow?

Contacted the Terraclean guys Fahad.......they quoted £460 to clean the turbo and manifold!! Is that steep or am I just tight??! :(

That's ridiculous money. Should be approx £100-£120.

For £460 I'd come round with the wife's toothbrush and do it for you myself!

They're obviously quoting for turbo and inlet manifold removal and cleaning too.

If you've fitted the fuel filter, bleeding it is part of the process, although the car will purge some of the air itself.
If it was done at a garage, they will have bled it when fitting it.

That's a ridiculous price Ian.. I would shop around or even whip off the turbo yourself and decoke it. If you have the time and tools, it's not that difficult. You will find your vanes are completely covered in soot..

If I have a free hour this weekend I'll do a turbo disassembly and reassembly tutorial. I have a civic one sat on my workbench in bits.

Excellent, I'll make it a sticky thread

Cool. Just remembered I've got a whole spare engine in the garage too. I'll do a full report including turbo removal.

Yes, filter was garage fitted.......

Yes, they quoted for a drive in drive out service at Terraclean.
My wife's toothbrush gets used for all sorts of odd tasks too. Luckily she never reads my postings on this forum....... :D

Any developments on this issue? Seems I may have a similar problem....kind regards Simon
