hi,

literrally on the way to the garage to get a service done last week the manifold went (exhaust fume smell in the cabin symptom). the garage offered me a second hand "revised" (without head shiled) one sitting there so i took it.

car was rushed out of the garage with turbo not tighen enough (had to come off to fit manifold it seems) and two pipes around it came off while driving. loud boosting turbo noise and black smoke with little power as a result. got that sorted but day after while changing from 3rd to 4th at just below 4k rpm the engine lost all power and management light came on. car would not restart initally but did after waiting 15mins. no apparent fuel leaks (fuel, air, oil filters were replaced during service). diagnostics said rail high fuel pressure and something about clutch pedal (i was changing gear so i guess it's not really related to the issue). garage drove it around and problem did not come back. car fine yesterday but then lost power again this morning while accelarating in 3rd below 3500 rpm but i lifted my foot off the pedal as soon i as felt it and power came back (no lights came on on dashboard this time).

then last night tailgate stopped working all together. found info in the forum about disconnecting the battery to reset the tailgate last night. it worked, thanks for that :)

at the moment i believe it is all linked to the work carried out but it might be a coincidence too.

any obvious suggestions on the possible issues given the work that was done to the car ?

thanks.

What was done on the service and was it all oem parts? It is highly recommended to use the at the very least the oem Fuel Filter, as you will read in many a thread, that by not using it can cause all sorts of fuel issues ;)

No expert but the diesel lads on here will tell you that if the fuel filter they replaced the old one with wasnt a Genuine Honda part you will have problems more than likely.

initially they had got an oem fuel filter which turned out to have a broken seal. they got a bosch one from their supplier instead. are bosch ones original ?

so you think the engine might be starved of fuel resulting in power loss ?

I think you need a differant garage or dealers to take your car in future.
When you say you lost power in 3rd gear are you sure this wasent the the dreded clutch slip.

tell me if i'm wrong but i don't think it was a clutch slip. car was going up revs fine when it suddenly stopped accelerating with revs going down, keeping my foot an accelerator made it feel like i was slowly down even faster.

i had been to that garage (independant honda specialist) a few times without any issues before but you certainly have a point :(

You need a genuine fuel filter mate. Get that done and go from there.

Bretts right, take it to a new garage.

I've just found that Bosch filters were ditched for Denso filters as they are self-primming. Is that right ? any idea as to when bosch ones may have been dumped by honda ?

Denso filters are on the facelift accord, your 55 reg car should have the Bosch filter.

car went back to the garage tonite and they confirmed a "P0088" code. They suspect a fuel pump issue. They're keeping the car overnight to drive it around with the computer plugged in to see if more information is given. let's see what happens.

If it didn't have this problem before it went in, it can't have just developed it overnight.

Really it needs someone to have a look at everything that's been done and see what's missing or incorrectly fitted (sorry if that sounds obvious). I've heard of mechanics fitting the turbo pipes on the wrong way round which can cause these types of issues.

Take it to a more reputable garage and let them diagnose it properly.

On friday the car showed codes P0087 and P1065 for low fuel pressure. Garage replaced the new fuel filter for another bosch one on saturday in case it was faulty but I had another power loss again today. I lifted my foot off the accelerator before EML came on not to loose all power on the motorway. Then tried several times to replicate the problem but could not do it.....it's strange....

looks like next thing to look at would be the fuel pump ?

After a bit of thinking at how the issues started, ie after the service & manifold replacement, I believe I need to refocus on this and not the fuel pump.

I'll see if I can check the FF fittings myself and check any actuators around the turbo etc....

Give the priming bulb a good squeeze, make sure it feels hard. If not then squeeze until it is. PERVS stay off!

lol.

is there any guides around with pictures as i have no idea on what to do / look for ? i know where the FF is, it's got the pipes on top of it. would the priming bulb be at the bottom ? what do you do, just squeeze the bulb ? is there a bolt or something to open first to let air out ?

The priming bulb is just above the FF, it may be difficult to see as there is shield over it but it is possible to get your hand onto it. There is a bleed nut on top of the FF but generally not reqired to be opened unless a new filter has been fitted, if your "engineers" did not do/know about this then I suspect their competence .

quick update....car was left this morning with a different garage that I trust as being good mechanics to check work done by other garage. as we're due to go on a long journey with the kids soon. report came back quickly:

1. fuel filter does not have "bosch" written on it (although i was ***ured it was twice!). mechanic thinks there might have been some air in the system. one thing that surprised him was the date on the filter (2006), he says fuel filters don't usually sit on a shelf for that long. proper honda filter is being sourced. I've asked him to keep the old new filter so i can take picture.

2. the replaced manifold has got threaded holes for a heatshield. trusty mechanic is surprised not to see one but is not too concerned. is anybody aware of a "revised" manifold that would not require one ? I wonder if garage cut another corner to save themselves money....

3. lastly, my mechanic thinks that an engine bearing might need replaced as it's not quite "ticking" properly. this is fine. i'll get that fixed if needed. you would think that garage should have mentioned that after a full service...

I had used the honda independant garage instead of my trusty mechanic for this car because i had heard that honda's required special knowledge. wonder why now lol...lesson learn, always go to a garage you can trust :). no guaranty that the issue will be fixed but at least i feel like i'm on the right path.

while they are at it change the oil AGAIN and make sure it is 0-30 fully synth. The first garage have got to be cowboys, name and shame to save others.

service sheet says 5w30 oil. I know that best one is 0w30. i'm not too fussed as i do not do high mileage and still carry out annual service. whether it really is 5w30 i have no idea. when i checked the oil stick it looked quite thin, not too sticky.

you're right, once i've got my car back and gathered the evidence i will name them. is there a wall of shame in the forum ?

Happy ending update :)

Car has been running fine since the filter was changed to bosch one. Trusty mechanic noticed a few other things with the car which should have been picked up during the service, sorted now. Turned out that the second hand manifold was not a revised one with 2 bolts, so I went back to the garage and asked for mine back, which they handed back without any issue.

I would not recommend Clydeside garage in Paisley. I'll say no more.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this :)

I'm really losing count now of how many issues we see due to non standard fuel filters on the diesel.

Glad it's sorted.

I would have asked for more than the old manifold, how about compensation?? and your money they charged you. WATCHDOG comes to mind. Too many half arsed garages around. Probably gave the job to an "apprentice" job seeker. Next time DIY, at least you will know it's done. Not only that they get the mark a bad name. I am aware that most manufacturers will wriggle and squirm when faults are pointed out but Honda are generally on top of any problems.

to be honest, i got sick of the repeated lies. incompetence is one thing but lies are 10 times worse. just wanted my car working and never to have to deal with them again in one way or another.
