Hello again people :)

There are a few issues that I need advice on and your help would be very much appreciated.

First and foremost major issue is my fuel economy :( :

I topped up 48.8 litres to be precise as soon as the fuel light came on and only got 320 miles till the light came back on. That includes 270 miles round trip to London from Birmingham. I rarely hammered it... At most I done 90 for about 20/30 miles, and around town I always drove under 2000 revs. From my calculation (possibly wrong lol), I'm getting around 30 to the gallon, which I'm sure is far below what I should be getting.
Fahad did tell me that my IMRC didn't pass all the tests, but it wouldn't be doing much as I've got the EGR off solution. He did however tell me to keep an eye on it and it would be better to replace it. I was wondering if this could be affecting my fuel economy? My mechanic suggested that I could somehow bypass or get rid of the IMRC (Can't remember his exact words).. He said it's up to me if I want it replaced but he said it's better to bypass. Just wanted to know if this is possible and/or a good solution? (And he is a good mechanic, he's done a fare share of work on Honda's and deals with a lot if high end sports cars)

I should also note that I did have one of my injectors changed as it was leaking very badly, and Fahad recalibrated it and they all seemed pretty good. I also haven't put my engine cover back on yet, so was wondering if this could be an issue also?

I also got the car serviced about 2000 miles ago, and I ***ume the fuel filter that my old one was replaced with is not a genuine Honda fuel filter as I had it serviced by my mechanic and not Honda  .

The only other issue that Fahad outlined was that my rear ABS sensor was not working... Therefore my VSA isn't either. (Sorry for being long, just trying to outline everything that has been done to my car lol  )

Apart from that, my car passed all the tests and is running smooth as anything, especially after the remap. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that all the sensors have been checked, the high pressure pump has also been tested and a leak back test on all the injectors were carried out by my mechanic before the service and all were fine. :D

I should also note that I have ordered a can of BG244 today to see if that will make a difference but I'm not very optimistic that it'll increase my fuel economy by sooo much.

Now onto the next thing (this is where my lack of DIY knowledge is exposed  lol):

I have just received a set of Apex Lowering springs for my car, I have been quoted £40 a side to fit them + £20 to fit the ABS sensor that isn't working. I just wanted to know if this is a reasonable price?

Finally, I decided to get a quote on how much extra my premium would be on the mods I have done to the car or am planning to do in the next week with my insurance company (Asda) and they quoted me £480 extra for Alloys, Tints and Spring... This seems ridiculously high . I was wondering if this is what I should have been expecting or are they just being extortionate c*#?ts?

Your help and advice will be more then appreciated! :D

I recently had Apex's fitted to my tourer (you won't look back by the way, they're a lot of bang for buck ;) ) and it worked out bout £50 a wheel I think. So £40+VAT per wheel is about spot on.

I'm insured with Chris Knott, through this site. I have a Cold Air Intake and Apex Springs fitted and my premium is equal to the cheapest quote I could find online without mods. So yes, speak to Chris Knott, tell them you came to them from TypeAccord and (***uming you have a clean licence and 5+ years of no claims like me) I'd have thought it should be cheaper than your ASDA quote.

As for the poor economy, I dunno man. There have been a couple of mysterious, poor MPG threads relating to Diesels on here. I'm not sure if they've been resolved in the end or not, but I'll let the Diesel boys help you out here. I don't know enough about the Diesel to comment.

:)

I agree that 30MPG is a little on the low side*... I rarely drop below 40. A recent thread did suggest (but not fully explain) that having larger wheels than standard was bad for your economy, but not sure if this affects you? The UK is now on 'winter diesel', so MPG will be a little worse because of this.

I've never heard of an IMRC being bypassed, it does serve a useful purpose in aiding economy and smoothness by matching the effective intake path length to the velocity of the incoming air... maybe it would respond to cleaning, so se this thread for info on that - http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/1517-maf-map-sensor-cleaning-imrc-valve-cleaning/

Correct fuel filters (which aren't actually made by Honda) are readily available for fitting by non-Honda garages... if your car is a prefacelift (like mine) then you should be able to see (under the rubber priming bulb) that a Bosch filter has been fitted and a facelift model should have a Denso filter (but I'm not sure if that's as easy to check?). But I don't see how an incorrect fuel filter would cause excessive fuel consumption.

I understand that ABS sensors can be got much cheaper if bought from the US - but you need to get one for an Acura TSX (not a US Accord).

BG244 is good stuff, in my experience.

*You didn't recently buy it from an Irish woman called Natasha, did you? (private joke for Freddofrog and others).

Thanks for your advice Jon. Much appreciated. I've got the prefacelift model.. So I'll check it out later today.

And I do have 18" Alloys on the car.. Up from the stock 16". I expected a drop in economy but not this bad lol

And as for the sensor, I have already ordered it from America as Fahad (Legend!) advised me to do that when he came down to do my remap.

And as for the joke... I may have read that thread and I can ***ure you I'm for real :p lol.. But my maths may not be spot on xD

And thanks Steve! For some reason I missed your post and read Jon's only :/.

My 5 years is coming up in Feb (22 atm.. License isn't even 5 years old yet lol)

And it's after seeing your thread on the tourer that I went for the Apex's! So doubley thanks for that :D

Looks like Natasha has started using smilies to fool us all :D

Seriously though, the proper way to check mpg is to reset the odometer on fill-up (i.e. when the pump clicks off). Then the next time you fill up (preferably at the same pump) the amount you put in is the amount you used to do the miles now on your odometer (which like most cars is reading about 5% higher than true). So 30mpg might actually be 40 mpg, but can't be more than that I'd say, still low for a diesel the way you're driving. Also check tyre pressures, makes a BIG difference to mpg.

As Brian has suggested find out your exact mpg first. Seems low though and no 18" wont be your cause as I've only recently swapped back from them to 16 and it a small different 2-3mpg at most maybe.

The car's dropped more since then. It's stance is very nice indeed (just watch your mudguards if you've got them ;) ). You can throw it around more and the braking response feels nicer as the car doesn't lurch forward as much. For the money, it's got to be one of the best value for money mods.

As for being only 22, that could go some of the way for explaining it. Under 25 and modding is an expensive thing as far as insurance is concerned. I'm fortunate as I can only now afford to buy mods (at 28 years of age) let alone insure them  .

And Brian's MPG advice is spot on. Get a bit **** about filling up, driving style and driving conditions. Only then can you get to the nitty gritty of the MPG issues.

Haha. Thanks Brian. I shall do that next time I fill up... My tyre pressure was checked before I traveled and I set it to 35psi all round (It was on about 32/33 and I read it somewhere on here that it should be 34/35).

And thanks Salim.. Atleast I know that ain't the problem :D

Ahh can't wait to get them fitted now! :D

I am actually the 2nd driver on the policy, my mum is 1st (and she does drive the car a lot but not too fond of the looks she gets sometimes ), hence I was a bit concerned at the premium when she has 10+ years NCB. Insuring a 2.2 on my own name would be by someway impossible.. especially in my area

You might want to check that you haven't got a binding/sticking brake... check for excessive heat after a bit of a run.

^ that's a good point. The old binding brakes happens to the best of us 7th gen owners. Especially the rears. You'd notice quicker if it was the fronts as the car would handle terribly!

I will check on that and report back asap :)

Damn, where would I be without this forum :D

If you want decent mpg you need to keep motorway cruising to just below 70mph, about the 1850 rpm mark. Mpg it drops alarmingly one you start doing speeds like 80.
My mpg dropped after fitting 18" wheels to replace the stock 16".

Thanks for the advice :)

ya i know how you feel mate, i got insured when i was 19 on my own on my icdti, nearly found it impossible, my mother also drives my car the odd time and hates the looks she gets Haha

Hello again people. Thought I'd update on the situation.

After using BG244, I noticed a pretty big hike in my MPG to my delight :D . I been getting around 38.8mpg as average (motorway & around town). I would expect a little more, but can't really complain compared to the 30mpg I was getting. I also noticed a much smoother drive and it being a little quicker B)

As for sticking brakes, I checked for excessive heat, and it didn't seem to be the case. My brake pads were worn out though, almost to the disk, only figured out when I heard a screeching sound.  However, they were changed prompto :)

AND...! I finally lowered my car on Apex's yesterday and all I am saying is OMG   :D :D. Looks a lot better and it handles like a beauty. And my labour was a BARGAIN! (compared to Steve's)

I also got my sidelight's changed, gear oil replaced and a genuine fuel filter fitted (as I was suffering from the notorious cut off, jerks and P2004 code on full throttle)

I shall be uploading pictures when the snow goes away, so I can wash my car without it being covered in dirt again on the way home
