Now, there's nothing like reading about a fault for imagining and worrying about it. I get very occasional whiffs of exhausty smells. But then wonder whether it's somebody else's exhaust... but it's not like a smell I've ever had in any other car.

I opened the bonnet last night (in the dark, needless to say) and had a good sniff behind the steering wheel. There's a sort of happy hot-diesely smell there (happy as it reminds me of fun times with vintage diesel engines) and it is delivered as a sort of gust of wind blowing up from the engine's nether regions.

Normal, or to worry? Thanks.

If you're not sure it's best to get it checked out.

If the problem has recurred you could be breathing in all sorts of poisons and carcinogens so worth getting it looked at pronto.

Agree with Cliff its not worth risking your health get it checked at the dealers.

just look around the manifold and turbo and look for a black sooty substance like the manifold gasket could of gone or the manifold could have a crack in it....

If its manifold it will smell of sooty fumes, not diesel - they're quite different smells.. The diesel might be a vapours from a split hose or something..
