hi all on my second accord after a unromantic affair with a tree with the first.

i have just purchased a 2002 1.8 sport in mint condition,1 owner with full hh in milano red. my wife has said yes to a few mods as its my 40th this yr but not sure what will give best results in performance. i don,t want a silly loud exhaust just a nice note. i have been reading about sensor problems with changing exhausts and induction kits. can you guys that have allready done this help with ideas?
thanks in advance

ps love the site

welcome along Chris, if you want a nice sound then an induction kit is ideal. When you give it full throttle it will make a roar but will be fine when driving normally.

If the kit is designed for your car you should be fine however do check before buying. Any problems you can go back to stock right.

thanks for that shabz

are some induction kits better than others? what about exhausts?

yes kits do vary, problem with exhausts is that they can get loud. Induction kits can be controlled but light throttle pressing

as i,m a complete idiot when it comes to things like this what would be your recomendations. to be honest i have 3 grand for this project so open to the best options. although i have spent 300 on wheel refurb. and have debadged the rear and looks a lot better

I had an eBay kit on my Accord, for £25 I couldn't fault it :) probably doesn't give any gains like the expensive ones may, but it looks ok and sounds good. It's currently on my Prelude, it's almost silent so long as you drive smoothly in low revs. However, open the throttle, hit VTEC and the sound is biblical :D still keeps me amused

Some piccys from before I threw a piston rod...

As for sensors, the Accord's MAP sensor is on the plenum chamber iirc whereas the induction kit clamps on the throttle body so there's no mucking around to be done. I think it tends to be cars utilising MAF sensors where things can be a bit more complicated but I'm not 100%, from experience my previous Audi's MAF sensor was between the airbox and throttle body so that required a new sensor housing if you were to fit an aftermarket induction kit. But I digress

At any rate mate look forward to seeing some pics as you start making your car yours :)

that was a cheap kit and it obviously works so maybe cheap is ok.

sorry to hear about your engine. wots your views on exhausts?

Well it worked at making noise and being shiny which was all I could ask for the money lol. As for performance I can't say I noticed anything except the throttle felt a bit sharper.

I never changed the exhaust on my Accord so can't say anything specific for the model, however I have fitted a performance exhaust to my VW Golf - even with two fairly large silencers it's noticeably louder and it starts to do my head in on motorway journeys where all you hear is one continuous loud note  the silencers are of the straight through performance variety and there is no catalytic converter, so that's probably not helping the noise. All I did was whack on an exhaust kit at the end of the day though, if you were to go to an exhaust specialist I'm sure they could tailor an exhaust to your exact requirements. I'm sure some of the guys on here will be able to show you their's and point you to reputable suppliers :)

thanks for that the thought of a constant rumble in my ear does appeal and as its only a weekend car and in garage all week it could be just good fun.
i thought you needed a cat for mot purposes

cheers.
any other members with experience of this, all info gratefully recieved

thanks again josh

My golf is a 1991 Mk2 so I don't have to meet very stringent emission standards, I think it's only post September '92 built cars that need cats :p Plus a cat wasn't factory fitted to my car!

Hey fella.

There are a lot of threads on here that are from other people asking about power increases. The honest answer is you might be able to gain an extra 10bhp if you're lucky with an induction kit, exhaust (2.5" madrel bent pipes) and a de-cat. Apart from that i wouldn't bother with anything else.

My advice would be to get an induction kit. Th eone that Josh has posted up is a good option, it's the same one i used to have on my old 2.0 SE 6th gen, and sounds great.

If you want more power though i'd sell yours and buy a Type R.

A cat is needed for an MOT pass, unless you have a friendly MOT tester. Even if your car passes the emmisions but there is no cat there, then the car will fail. de-cat also requires a spacer to be put in for the O2 sensor.

If you want to keep the noise down, just get a "decent" backbox to smarten up the rear of the car. An induction kit is great, but it is noisy and addictive. Exhaust & Induction kits will make you drive with a heavy foot, so be prepared for a big drop in petrol. :D

Good and effective mods are lowering springs (probably not worth forking out for coilovers), a decent set of alloy wheels, upgrade the disks and pads.

Subtle external mods much as decent bulbs, led W5Ws, detango the indicators all help.

Also, if there are chrome trim bits, consider colour coding them to the car.

Oh, and debadge it the best you can, although the H badges will probably have pins on the back so will need to stay.

hi all

thanks again for your input guys it is appreciated.

found induction kit on ebay and looks ok. they also seem to have a large selection of sportex direct fit rear box,s are they any good?.
car is de-badged now and H gone from boot with no holes. don,t know if i can do front grill.

http://www.supersprint.com/en/prod-c-81-5951-7891-rear_exhaust_oo_80.aspx if you can still get them. Lovely exhaust, had one on my 5th Gen (with the rest built by Charlie at ProSpeed including a 100cpsi free flow cat.

The cheap eBay filter possibly won't offer the best filtration. The intake pipe should be ok, but personally I'd put a Green Cotton or K&N cone on the end of it.

thanks shiny will have a look at that in depth and i understand what you say about filter. its not the normal thing i would put on the end of it lol.
not sure where to go to be honest will need to make some calls to manufacturers.

or should i take to a performance centre and let them do there thing?

Debadged ftw!!!

I do miss driving my Accord, for it's age I think the 6th Gen is a proper sexy car :D

Shame I have the new engine stuck half jammed in mine

How much longer are you thinking it's gonna take you to get the conversion finished.

If everything went as simply as it should it'd be fairly soon... Unfortunately problems keep popping out the woodwork :( hopefully getting a mate to help me get the block in this weekend (was attempting it solo last weekend, bad move  ). Once the block is in the next major hurdle will be the wiring. I'm currently trying to get the dash out but for all the bolts and screws I've undone it still won't come out!!

I should've bought a Type-R

     But at least this way you'll have something unique that you did yourself! B)

Yeah, I stuck with my Accord because it's got a lot of sentimental value, my first Honda and all that :p I'm looking forward to having the extra power but also keeping the refinements of the SE Exec too, this car isn't going on the track or anything so weight & rigidity aren't too much of a problem.

Speaking of uniqueness, do you reckon I could get away with not using the passenger side mount?? Neither the Prelude mount or the Accord mount are any use here, seems to be the only one that isn't interchangeable :/

I have exactly the same car with a induction kit and a Racesports jap can. sounds nice with the induction kit when got your foot down but sitting doing motorway miles you carnt even hear it, was very impressed with this and this is my second back box both sounded the same :)

Sorry to bring up and old thread but just wondering what induction kit this was? As i cant find any on ebay for less than 50 quid and none look like they will fit properly either
Thanks
Shane

Thats an unbranded ebay kit, ismilar one for prelude that fits. Better off just buying piping and making your own.

I just got a 25mm hole saw and perforated the lower side of the air filter housing about 5 times.

It makes me :D and cost nothing
