Hi my 53 plate Accord diesel decided to ruin my morning!

On my way to work while driving there was a sudden loss of power, engine management, esp and the yellow triangle all came on. Basically the acceleration pedal was completely unresponsive.

As I had to get to work with the car idling at it's minimum speed in each gear as the acceleration didn't respond at all. Late to work switched the engine off and half an hour later I turn it on acceleration works fine but engine management light is still on and all the other lights are off.

I changed the fuel filter with an original Honda one a few months ago.

The good thing is I went travelling in Europe a month ago and it didn't happen then ! Imagine coming from Germany with 35 mph!

Help please ?

Looks like the car went into "limp" mode. You'll need to get the codes read to see what the issue is/was. Anything beyond that is speculation.

On the plus side, as it seems fine now, it's probably nothing critical (e.g. timing chain). Get the codes read and report back!

If you are confident with the filter change then next time it happens try this__ pull up and switch off, let it stand for 3 minutes or so, then give it a go, if it goes into limp again repeat the first but get under the bonnet and squeeze the priming bulb until it is hard, then try it. If that fails then call your Honda approved garage, or the AA, BUT do not put too much faith in the AA LOL

Makes sense but here's the trick question: should I keep driving to work until I have a day off to get it sorted ?

I think I over rated Honda's reliability this time....

***uming priming bulb is that small rubber thing you need to squeeze if run out of diesel ? So it could be a fuelling problem ?

I seriously thinking to fix it, sell it and buy a petrol ! This is the first car I had that let me down while driving somewhere... guess there's a first time for everything

The risk if you keeping driving is that could go into limp mode at any point (hello 70mph on motoryway?). Personally, I'd get the codes read ASAP to give you some idea of what's actually the problem. It may be something straightforward.

As for Honda's reliability ... they are actually not that bad, really. There are a few diesel Ninja's on here - where's Jon_G? - who could support this.

Or overtaking and getting close to a bend ! :) I will borrow my friends Civic for the time being

Exactly! Good idea.

Hello Jason... Ninja reporting for duty!

Yes, these diesels are actually very good. There are a lot of minor issues reported, but mainly because there are so many diesel Accords around, and they've normally done intergalactic mileages.

I agree that the codes need to be read before anyone can be sure of the problem. Could be an EGR valve problem?

He was upset and a little angry, so perhaps he set fire to it and claimed on the insurance?

Currently, I could sympathise.

Yes, good point... yet another benefit of diesel is it's reluctance to burst into flames and incinerate the occupants of the vehicle.

I guess if you wished to set fire to a diesel car you'd have to first obtain some highly dangerous petrol and use that. Should be banned really...

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply, I took my car in for a diagnostic last Tuesday and it took the mechanic over one week to get in touch with another mechanic who was a Honda expert so he could tell me what the actual problem is. I think he actually posted on a forum asking for advice ... as it should have taken him 5 min to make a phone call and get an answer but mechanics these days !

Apparently the problem was cause by the Accelerator position pedal sensor. Next to where the acceleration cable there is another cable that plugs in and apparently that's what's causing the problem. He also told me this is a permanent error not a temporary one and that the sensor costs about £ 350 .

The fault code are P1248 and P2138

The car is running great and I started driving to work again; there is a big difference between a 2.2 diesel and my mates 1.4 Civic ... sudden loss of 50 bhp can be called a tragedy :))

I still love my car but it was the first time (hopefully the last) when she let me down.

What do you guys think ? Should I change the sensor ?

happy there ninjas here as well :)

Glad you haven't torched it.

If you search the forums (make sure 'forums' is selected) for 'throttle position sensor' there are a few threads on the subject. Those DTCs do suggest a problem in this area, but sometimes it worth deleting multiple stored codes to see which one comes back.

Yes the APP is a fairly common failure and affects both diesel and petrol 2.4 cars. They actually share the same part number apparently, which is something I learnt helping another member diagnose his recently.

Get a second hand one for around £50 from any breaker.
