Today when I had the engine idling outside a shop I noticed a noise, kind of like a thunk thunk thunk thunk coming from the timing belt area, definitely not the engine as the noise does not increase when the oil filler cap is off

The noise completely goes away as soon as you blip the throttle or drive off

It not loud, but can be heard over the top of the engine which as you all know are pretty quiet anyway

Is it something I should be worried about?

Cheers for any advice, hope its not something bad as its the worst time of year to have to spend money on cars :(

I would say you need your tappets reset. This is done every 60k from memory as part of your service schedule.
This is a guild for a 2.4 but don't go by the settings.

I'm getting them done after christmas as I know they need doing, as they knock especially from cold

Would you say it was defo that? as when the oil cap is screwed off the noise doesent get any louder, which you would have thought it would

Im not 100% Andrew but wait till the 6th gen members are on hear.
BTW its not a good ideal to remove your oil cap when the car is running.
It might also help if you can get up a video of the noise.

If the frequency of the noise does not increase with the revs then it's not your VCs.

It's hard to describe a sound, but can you think of something it's like? Like a spoon on an empty can or nails tapping on a worktop? Or more low like feet on the floor.

Probably be best if I do a quick video and post back, and its really hard to describe, noise goes off soon as you blip the throttle even slightly

Thats the best way Andrew with a vid as you said its very hard to describe a noise.

That'll be your VCs mate. Get them sorted and the noise will vanish.

Also while you're there a quick couple of things to do : remove and clean dizzy cap, remove HT leads and check condition too. Also check plug condition.

Have you done the EGR valve and plate clean?

*edit* also when was your cam belt and tensioner changed?

Thanks mate, as mentioned I will be getting the VC's done when I have the clutch cylinders done

Apparently the cambelt was done at 83k 3 years ago, its on 105k now, no proof of it though, he seemed genuine and truthful it had been done as he said he had it done when he got the car 3 years ago, must admit my first thought was a noisy tensioner

Are cambelts known to snap on these engines?

And no I havent done the egr and plate clean yet :(

The belts aren't known to snap no, but the tensioners do fail. Iirc the belt should changed at 70k. Might be worth getting the VCs done, defo worth cleaning the plate and valve, then maybe getting the belt and tensioner done.

But I think if you get the clearances done, the noise should quieten.

I was correct for once lol I said the tappets.
For piece of mind get the belt done.

Thanks for all your input and advice chaps, Yes I will get the VC's done and go from there

I remember when I messaged the guy on ebay and asked him about the belts and he came back straight away and said it was done and that he had forgotten to put it on the ad

I then rang him and he said and was adament the belts had been done, and he said again when I viewed the car, although without proof even if the pope said the belts were done I would'nt believe it without paperwork

As said the noise is only present on idle, and i'm probably making it sound alot worse than it is, the car sounds and runs smooth as when being driven

thread revival :D

Iv got a similar noise to this, not as obvious, not sure what you all mean by VC's :p.

Also theres a slight noise when I rev the engine, only occurs around 1500rpm above and below its gone sounds like a tapping sound. should I be concerned about that? car drives well and pulls strong ect

EDIT: Forgot to mention the noise increases in frequency higher revs and gets slower till I cant hear it

Cheers Steve :)

Ahh makes sence now :p

Any clue on the little tapping/ticking sound I get under light revs in neutral?

Put a video of the sound up.

My engine sounds very similar to the OP, slightly less noisier but its 4k overdue VC's which sis cheduled at 81k, need to find some time and balls to do it.
