Oil.... for the thousandth time

So you know better than Honda's engineers! Hopefully you've written to them to inform them of this terrible mistake?

I have no idea what that actually means. But, being an engineer, I suppose I am meant to feel insulted? Perhaps all car servicing decisions should be based upon hope, belief and random guesses!
 
He was an engineer himself so I ***umed you'd know.

I suspect some of these decisions are out of the engineers' hands. At the end of the day Honda like everyone else have to shift units to budget conscious fleet managers.

Agree... I have a theory that the Honda recommendations of very thin engine oils (e.g. 0w20 for the petrol and 0w30 for the diesel) are based upon improving fuel economy rather than effectively lubricating the engine.
 
Okay just my 2 cents, I've used 3 different oils in my servicing since I've had the car, 2.0l petrol and have it since 2008. I've used 10w-40, 5w-40, and 0w20. I haven't noticed any notable differences in any of them in terms of drive, but when using the 0w20, the car was using less oil between services, meaning less top-ups, so I've continued using the 0w20.

Honda also states that the 0w20 is a more fuel efficient oil, not that I've noticed :rolleyes:

If I had a k24, I'd use the 5w40, cos that's what Honda recommends for all the higher revving engines... but reading other forums and lads with dc5's, they seem to find that 5w30 is a better oil for their engines k20a :huh: :huh: :huh:

HH suggested I use 0w30 for the 2.4. The last service Castrol Edge 5w40 was used so I am going with that grade for the first oil change I do on the car.

How much oil does the K24 take, is it 4.2L?
 
Just checked castrol online & it recommends castrol edge 0w30, so im just going for that, fingers crossed. Should be ideal for this cold weather, not sure if it would be laters.

Rich i thought it was 4.2L for the same car at a friends oil change, but turned out he needed just over 4.5L. Its a good idea to put straight 4L after the full drain & then check dipstick & keep topping up & checking & topping up & checking until its at the right mark. Phew
 
I can't decide what to get, looking at the history again I think it's always had 0w30 oil now. The car is on 98k so is it going to be ok to change it to 5w40 now or should I just stick to what it's had in the past? I know both oils are ok for this engine I just don't want to cause any issues by changing it. The oil level was very low as well when I got the car so I think it must use it alot.

I'm hoping to get at least a 5L bottle so will have enough for the change. I did want a drum but that will have to wait until next year, I'm all spent out! :lol:
 
0w30... The engine is fine... don't worry. ..also could take 5w40 with no problems and you will not feel that difference between them.

I´m a bit puzzled about oil options for my 08' i-CTDi..
I know that the recommended oil is 0W30, and that is what I´d like to use. However I´m having problems finding a fully synthetic oil that meet all the required standards.
At work we sell LiquiMoly, and I have this oil in stock and could get it for a reasonable price:

BUT this oil does not have the C2/C3 Classifications that Honda requires. :huh: :mad:
The LiquiMoly catalog suggests you should use 5W30 semi synthetic that does have all the classifications that Honda requires, but the viscosity is wrong and I don´t want to run semi-synthetic.
I also asked my local Honda dealer about what oil they use for the i-CTDi.s but they said that they use 5W30 or 5w40 on them just like in the petrol cars..
I was also talking about this on local Honda forums, and a large number of users have used 5W40 or 5W30 in their Diesel-Hondas without any problems.. Some for over 400.000kms!

So, the bottom line.
Should I worry more about the viscosity, or the Classifications? Would I be OK using Synthoil Longtime Plus, or should I look for something else..?
 
I think you are fine using the 5w30, I'd pay more attention to the classifications over the viscosity. The only issue I see is, that Honda says their oil is fully synthetic, not semi :unsure: :unsure:

While I strongly believe that the 0w rating instead of a 5w rating is unnecessary (and costly) for UK temperatures, I think I'd actually want to use it in Finland... the temperatures there do get properly cold and there may be a benefit. But I otherwise agree with Mr Honda that the other oil specifications are very important and should be adhered to.
