Averaging around 380-400 miles to a full tank, 70% motorway @ 70mph on cruise, no hard acceleration, very little town driving.
Using decent quality fuel (not supermarket stuff).
I'd have thought I would get more.

Yeah, that's not good. My 04 only does short trips nowadays, with the first and last mile all speedhumps.
I'm not kind to it at all, and it still does over 500 between fill-ups.

Mine does do well over 100 miles once the light comes on though.

What does it return when you do the maths on a fill up? I get 37 at the moment on a diet of short journeys.

Used to be well in the 40's when I did more motorway work, and on cruise at 70, it normally averages close to 60mpg according to my OBD reader (which was accurate over a tank)

Not on BP ultimate is it? My car hates that stuff for some reason.

Loves regular Shell and Tesco stuff though.

The first thing to check is the whole intake system because it could be clogged with deposits from the exhaust ( trough EGR valve )

I had before the intake clean 43-45 mpg and after 48-50.
What is BP ultimate? Premium diesel?

Yep check intake, clean out, replace thermostat (if its the original one), and ensure you're running correct tyre sizes with correct pressures.

It's a premium diesel, but for whatever reason my car gets terrible fuel consumption using it.

Hmm...strange
Mine with premium fuel ( 55-57 cetane number ) runs smoother with the same consumption compared with standard EN590 fuel

Mine runs fine on Shell stuff, just returned over 5mpg less for exactly the same journey when I filled it at a BP station.

I can't discern any difference between running it on V-Power of shell regular, and fuel consumption is the same too.

Maybe my butt dyno needs recalibration, or maybe years of riding motorcycles have reduced it's accuracy when it comes to cars.

I noticed that too. Especially when talking about power

Back when I was 19, I had a TL1000S.
Used to take out all my friends who were car guys, warp their sense of speed, and within a year, they'd have a bike stashed in the garage too.

Used to help that it'd still be hanging the front wheel off the tarmac at 140mph with the extra weight of a pillion up high and out back.

Been without a road bike for 18 months now, for the first time in 16 years.
Getting the itch again. A car just can't scratch it. Probably because it doesn't lean over and give you that flow through a good set of s-bends.

I put the firestorm away a year ago as my work took me overseas, but I can see me reinstalling the battery and pumping up the tyres very soon.

My Dad had a Firestorm at the same time. Cracking bike. Broke the TL gearbox the day before a track day at Brands, and he graciously lent me his bike to do it on.
Put a supercorsa on the front and had a whale of a time. Even got black flagged for making too many sparks dragging the pegs everywhere. Took the hero blobs out and went back out only to get another black flag for making more sparks dragging the exhausts all over the place. Wore out the little belly pan on it that day and he didn't even mind. Massively underrated machines for a bit of fun.

My scratcher is still on googlemaps (despite being off road for well over a year) if one looks hard enough. I blanked off the LH exhaust and then drilled out the remaining silencer to suit. Nothing down either side touches the deck unless I really try, thanks to the weight savings front and rear.

The TL engine however is an absolute monster.

This is my ex baby...had to sold it :'(

I drove my car from Sydney to Canberra and back on the weekend, undulating freeway, sitting on about indicated 70mph (GPS was saying 113 km/h). After fiddling with downshifting from 6th to 5th on the uphill sections l on the way there, on the return trip I kept it in 6th and let the cruise control sort out fueling.

Air conditioning was on the entire way @ 22 degrees and it was about 25 - 27 outside. Instrumentation indicated 54.2 MPG on freeway and 47.something in traffic.

On a 30 Km freeway drive yesterday without air con, with 110, 100, 90 & 80 km/h sections (Australian speed limits are a bit of a clown suit) I was getting about 60+mpg. Real figures will of course be higher.

On the bike front, I have a (currently not registered) Ducati 848 that has had the front dropped a bit and the rear suspension re-valved and tuned to my body weight, It corners scary fast.

Hopper - what's the deal with losing a pipe? Is that a weight saving thing?
Is it you that lives on the IOM?
I actually bought my TL-S for going over to watch the TT in '03. Went again in '04 but life's been in the way since. Just sold my 675 Daytona too, so have no road bike at the moment either.

Richard - sounds like you're getting really good mileage. Mine'll do that on a relatively flat motorway run, but I only ever see a journey like that if I've been offered collecting parts from eBay that I've secretly bought.
Love the idea of the 848, and in my head I'm hoping it rides like the old 748 used to. Last Ducati sportsbike I rode was a 1098 and thought it was pretty decent. Don't have the balls to ride the big litre stuff anymore though, there's just so much unused performance I always feel guilty.

52 MPG... What do you want more? :)

If you want a good bike buy a Japanese one. It's waaay more fluid/gentle to ride out the corners and less agressive. Ducati pulls like a tractor and it's very explosive bike but this don't make you fast. However everyone have his own taste and driving style. Ducati have some very nice design but still... Buy an Honda CBR 1000 RR SP2 :)

Jan, I used to sell them for a living for a multi franchise dealer so am lucky enough to have ridden most things out there. (Even rode an HRC kitted Blade ;) )

The last four new bikes I bought with my own money?
A KTM and three Triumphs. I like bikes with soul, and the Ducatis also have it in spades. It's rare for a Japanese bike to have as much character.
Though I do have a wire-wheeled '78 GS750 and an '82 1100 Katana in the garage.

I think I was over there the year before, but took the VF1000FE.

The firestorm was thrown down the road by the previous owner and the left side was a mess, including the pipe, so I thought better to see what I could do with what I had rather than start sourcing bits . Total cost came to about £600 on the road, what with a spot of welding, clocks and a bit of hammering of the rear subframe to straighten everything out.

Quite apt this is the fuel consumption thread btw.

As above. Everyone have his own taste ;-)
Exactly. It'd be a boring world if we all liked the same things.
I like all the bikes that the media aren't that keen on for some reason.
There are so many surprises out there if you ride everything with an open mind.

Still never ridden a motorcycle I didn't like. Anything with two wheels and an engine's fantastic as far as I'm concerned.

Hahaha. You on carbs? My Dad's one had the small tank too. 110 between fill-ups no matter how hard you try to be good to it.

^^haha exactly...two wheels :) i had to sell my bike because i build now my apartment so some extra money is welcome. I can't wait the day when i will sit again on one of these beasts :)
