Read several threads on power boots totally failing, having to clamber through the boot, but my problem is different!

Picked up an 05 estate on Saturday, with a reciept in the folder for a power boot motor replacement last month for £730. When you press the button off the key the boot opens halfway, stops and closes. It then tries again on its own stops half way then closes and that's it. If you open it manually it's fine! I could live with it but would rather it worked!

Someone told me the new motor needs to be recoded? Don't know if there is truth in this?

Thanks in advance!

I think that is correct it might need coding as it has its own ECU I think.

When you say it opens manually ok, does it fully open under its own steam?
Gas strut failure is fairly common and the motor might not fully open the lid without some ***istance from the struts.
Failing that I seem remember a thread somewhere about open / closed sensors needing to be set up, but I can't seem to find it just now.

If I open it by hand it it just like a normal boot, no resistance, opens and shuts sweet as a nut.

Under its own steam it will only open half way bleeps a bit, then shuts it's self. Also if it is fully open (manually) the boot will not shut itself, both from the key or the button on the boot!

Someone spent 730 I'm surprised they didn't try and get it to work!!

What year is your car? The earlier models all failed in this respect. The motors went :( . They were covered under a 7 year warranty, but I imagine yours is out of warranty. I was fortunate, had a couple months left on mine when it went. Got it done for free. The motors are an expensive part and it's pretty labour intensive as the tailgate needs to come off.

The fact that you can open/close sweet as a nut, would suggest the motor's at fault, not working properly. Mine's stiff you see, maybe because of the resistance of the motor.

However, as I type this, I wonder if the struts are playing up, especially if yours is a 2005 or later (which should have the newer motor in it unlike the 2003-2004 models like mine. Some here have replaced their struts to sort tailgate issues. There's a guide on how to do it somewhere here. Search tailgate struts, but use the google custom search. The forum's own search is hopeless and rarely yields appropriate results  .

It's 2005, like I said in the original post it's had the motor replaced by honda last month! I have an invoice and a credit card reciept! But I've only just got it so I don't really know what the garage had to say about it! I will probably pop to honda and see what they say!

If the struts are holding the boot fully open fine, then it's not them.

The boot ECU doesn't need to be coded to the main ECU, it simply sits off the MICU on the B-Can and does it's own thing. It only reports things back like the boot is open/closed, etc.

Actually what you are describing is the as if the boot is "detecting" a false object. Part of the sensors on the boot try to determine if there is an obstacle in the way (i.e. if you park against a wall) and it will automatically close. These sensors are located in the boot itself and around the edges of the frame. Does it close itself properly? (i.e. from fully open to automatic close?)

Do you simply try a power reset? Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery for 10 mins?

Ah, sorry man, I just missed that totally  . Yeah, get straight back to Honda. If they're anything like my Honda garage, they'll look at it free of charge and hopefully sort it.

Yeah, I did think that about it sensing something there. Haven't tried a reset I will get on that later! Yes it closes perfectly! and opens perfectly but just has a little spaz before closing itself again!

Strange! I will try the reset and report back!
