Hi all,

I have drained, flushed and replaced the coolant today. The HB suggests, after replacing the coolant, running the car until the fan kicks in. Car temperature at normal after 10 mins or so and waited...still no fan.
Ran the engine (idle with and without AC) for maybe 30 mins...still no fan. Ran the car at 1500-2000rpm for several mins and still nothing. Car temp still at norm. Am i not running the engine enough or maybe not enough load? I haven't taken it for a run yet, thought i'd check here first.

I am a total noob to engine diy so would really appreciate any opinions.

probably an air lock. Have you bled the system by loosening the bleed screw at the top of the engine with the engine running???? There is also a bleed screw on the expansion bottle IIRC. I did this almost 2 years ago so cant really remember the details. Try taking the rad cap off and running the engine around 2,000 rpm with the heater on max. That should allow for all the air to escape normally. When taking it for the first few drives, keep an eye on the temp gauge.

Thanks Saj,
Yes I initially left the rad cap off for 10mins and watched it bubble and gush a small amount of coolant out then topped it back up. I've just been out for a 15 min high rev run, quite nice, kept it between 2000 and 3000rpm. Got it back and the rad fan has still not kicked in. Temp normal no steam.

You don't want the heater on bud... It takes heat from the engine.

Strike that! Fan rad has kicked in, engine temp normal. All good. Thanks.

Good oh...:D

I may be wrong but I thought having the heat on allows the coolant to circulate through the system and allow air to escape naturally through the bleed valve or open rad cap

next time you do a coolant change, try it in summer will help the fan kick in faster

coolant fan works along side with outside temp gauge & oil temp ...

Yeah having the heater set to hot allows water to flow fully through the system. However on the diesel waiting for the radiator fan to come in especially at this time of year is going to be a very long wait, I did mine in summer and gave up waiting for it to kick in after a good 20mins.

The HB instructs to set climate to hi while running the engine after initially filling the rad from empty for bleed purposes.
In terms of checking temperature of the engine and the rad fan initiating, the system worked the engine hotter with the climate off, and so causing the rad fan to start. I think that's what Dan was referring too. Unless something goes belly up I think it's sorted now boys, thanks for the advice.

Just check coolant level tomorrow best on a morning after its been stood all night.
