Gearbox oil

My local garage is saying that if I want to replace the gearbox oil (whilst replacing my clutch) that the special Honda gearbox oil costs £100 ! This seems like one HECK of a lot of money...
A. Is he right ?
B. Is there something else we could use that is cheaper (and perhap better too??)

My Accord has done 91,000 miles so I'm thinking maybe replacing the gearbox oil would be no bad thing.
He says that if the oil is in okay condition, he could put it back in - but if I want to replace the oil then that's what it will cost !

they having you on.i changed my clutch month ago at holdcroft.
price for 1 litre of gearbox oil is 10.37£ and you need 2 or 3 litre,i am not sure on that.

lol, also how could he tell if it's ok? Has he got access to Infrared Spectroscopy in the back room of the garage or summit.don't think so....

hope he's got the proper Honda tool to align the clutch....

£100 Seriously!! I think he's trying to have a laugh!

Speak to HH they should be able to supply 3 litres for £25-£30 with free next day delivery. Your gearbox takes 2.2 litres by the way.

But if I were you i'd do it myself it's a very easy job, it won't take an hour.

There's a DIY on here to change it as well.

I spoke to CG Motorsport (who do the Paddle Clutch which was recommended by Fahad - with its 6 paddles and some special thermometallic drive plate that can handle 1300 DegC rather than Honda's 700 Deg C etc etc).

I'm not sure what this proves either way but they say the correct oil cost £48. Tempting to go cheap but the fear is that the incorrect gearbox oil could be an expensive mistake... :^/

My advice would be to find another garage mate. Gear oil is very easy to change on the diesel. Just drain from the bottom drain plug then refil from under the battery.

*cough* you mean under air filter box...

^lol sorry yea, its been a while since i did it. brain like a sieve me, lol

As far as I'm aware there is no better gearbox oil for the Accord than Honda's very own MTF3. As already pointed out you're looking at about £30 for the oil (as you need 2.2 litres but it comes in 1 litre bottles).

CG may be quoting you a price including labour in which case that's quite reasonable.

As above, I paid about £35 for Honda MTF when I got mine done. Not sure how much the labour charge was.
