Hi,
I am coming on here to ask you chaps having read extensively on these, and other, forums about possible solutions to my problem. I have also been to a Honda dealer twice as well as a two different independent garages which were local to me, and despite expensive repairs the problem has not subsided. I'll give a brief history and description of the problem, apologies for the detail but I want to get everything in there!
So a few months ago I noticed a vigorous "shuddering" throughout the car whilst accelerating, particularly when going up-hill or turning to the right. I went to a Honda dealer who suggested that the clutch and flywheel needed replacing, so I carried out this repair (not at Honda prices I hasten to add) and there was no improvement except that I now have a very smooth clutch.
I then went back to the dealer who suggested that I change my nearside driveshaft. I replaced this, along with the rubber and noticed no improvement whatsoever. The part which came off looked slightly rusty, but wasn't visibly misshapen or damaged in any other way.
I took the car to a local independent mechanic, to whom I have taken previous cars been very happy with the work. He recommended changing the balancing shaft and bearing, as this is apparently a common issue with the 2.2 ctdi engine. I went ahead and had this work carried out, at substantial cost as the sole manufacturer of the balance shaft is Honda, and have noticed a slight improvement. While I realise this is purely anecdotal, I believe there is now slightly less shuddering, and now does not occur all the time.
At the moment there is a shuddering, during which the whole car can be felt to wobble very noticeably, as I accelerate in any gear from around 50mph to around 65mph. Above and below these speeds, there is either a very minor shuddering or none that I can detect.
I would really appreciate some expert advice to help me get to the bottom of this problem, as it's driving me absolutely insane! I like everything else about the car and would very much like to keep it, but I need to get this issue rectified before I am happy with it. I have asked dealers, reputable independent mechanics, enthusiast friends and scoured the internet, and can't think of anything else to do after asking here.
Many thanks in advance,
Larry.
