Hi,

I am coming on here to ask you chaps having read extensively on these, and other, forums about possible solutions to my problem. I have also been to a Honda dealer twice as well as a two different independent garages which were local to me, and despite expensive repairs the problem has not subsided. I'll give a brief history and description of the problem, apologies for the detail but I want to get everything in there!

So a few months ago I noticed a vigorous "shuddering" throughout the car whilst accelerating, particularly when going up-hill or turning to the right. I went to a Honda dealer who suggested that the clutch and flywheel needed replacing, so I carried out this repair (not at Honda prices I hasten to add) and there was no improvement except that I now have a very smooth clutch.

I then went back to the dealer who suggested that I change my nearside driveshaft. I replaced this, along with the rubber and noticed no improvement whatsoever. The part which came off looked slightly rusty, but wasn't visibly misshapen or damaged in any other way.

I took the car to a local independent mechanic, to whom I have taken previous cars been very happy with the work. He recommended changing the balancing shaft and bearing, as this is apparently a common issue with the 2.2 ctdi engine. I went ahead and had this work carried out, at substantial cost as the sole manufacturer of the balance shaft is Honda, and have noticed a slight improvement. While I realise this is purely anecdotal, I believe there is now slightly less shuddering, and now does not occur all the time.

At the moment there is a shuddering, during which the whole car can be felt to wobble very noticeably, as I accelerate in any gear from around 50mph to around 65mph. Above and below these speeds, there is either a very minor shuddering or none that I can detect.

I would really appreciate some expert advice to help me get to the bottom of this problem, as it's driving me absolutely insane! I like everything else about the car and would very much like to keep it, but I need to get this issue rectified before I am happy with it. I have asked dealers, reputable independent mechanics, enthusiast friends and scoured the internet, and can't think of anything else to do after asking here.

Many thanks in advance,

Larry.

Larry have you had the simple things checked like tyres /Balancing/and most portent get the car on a Hunter laser alignment.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, three of the tyres are almost new and the fourth is in good condition. I've had the car looked at before it went in for the balance shaft and bearing, and was told that the wheel balancing was fine. I haven't yet had the car on the Hunter laser alignment, and have to admit I haven't heard of it before - is it something most garages would have?

No mate not many garages have this machine but they are the best by far.An average price would be around £60 to £80 for the alignment.
Have a look or Google Align my car to find your nearest place with a hunter.I had mine done as i was experiencing twitching on the steering and all is now sorted.

Thank you for the advice there, I have searched and found two within a 15-minute drive so I'll make a couple of calls tomorrow morning.

Having read through the information on their site, it looks like you're on to something. I will be giving myself a slap if this does turn out to be the problem; my steering wheel has been slightly turned to the right when traveling in a straight line for a while now but I never thought anything of it!

This is the cheapest thing to do and i will recommend anyone doing this every year as part of your service. The Accord is very sensitive and has only has to be slightly out on alignment and can cause all sorts of problems.

have you done a Gearbox oil change?

I haven't since I bought the car, but it is due soon for a service and I could do it then. Sorry if it's a silly question, but could that possibly be related to this problem?

could make a problem worse, I had my MTF changed a few weeks ago, the difference was unreal, almost felt like a different car, better economy too.

is the car high mileage?

Thanks then, I'll have that done with the service, I honestly don't know when it was last done! The car is relatively high-mileage at 128,000 now.

As said mate try the simple and cost effected things 1st before you go down the road of a new turbo.

Definitely! I will try getting the alignment done first, as it sounds like that might be out on my car. It doesn't say anywhere that bad alignment would cause shaking, but it happens most when turning right and the steering wheel is turned that way when traveling straight; can't be a coincidence can it?

Check wheel balance and if necessary get a second opinion, Check for buckled wheels. Swap the front wheels for the rears to see if there is an improvement. Are your tyres cheapo tyres.?? they could be out of shape.

You also say 3 are fairly new and one is more worn. Are the tyres the same tread pattern and tread depth on the front wheels.

90% of the time wobble and tracking issues are due to the tyres and i would 150% rule out the tyres and wheels before throwing money at my car. I very much doubt a laser alignment will solve your wobble issue. But it will straighten your steering.

...I'm pretty sure that changing the gearbox oil won't help much either. Or the turbo (where did that suggestion come from?)

Hi everyone, little update here - I've had a really hectic time at work recently and moved house twice in the last 3 weeks!

I took the car to get the wheel alignment done and replace the (very) worn fourth tyre. All the tyres are now in pretty much new condition, the alignment is sorted out and they checked the suspension/had a look at the car for me on a ramp. Both the mechanics who looked over the car and tested it are of the opinion that it's some sort of driveshaft problem. They have recommended taking it to the local Honda dealer (Guildford) and having them ***ess it before having the final driveshaft replaced, but unlike the previous dealerships I've been to they charge £65 to even look at the car.

Now can't decide whether to just have the driveshaft done and save the £65 ***essment fee, or have it done with no guarantee that they can tell me the actual problem. I'm really low on funds at the moment and this car is the source of a not inconsiderable amount of anger!

my friend has same issue with his 2004 ctdi tourer after replacing one driveshaft problem still persist, after he changed all 3 drive shafts and spending 800 pounds problem was solved.

ive got exactly the same problem with my 2.4 honda accord gen 7 estate

only has a problem when accelerating from 50 - 65

really annoying but want to know what it is before i shell out lots of dough

It will be the inner CV Joints, i see it a lot (i'm a Honda technician in a dealer) Difficult to know if its just one or both so i advise changing both. seems quite a common problem, the CRV does it too, more common on them though.
