Alright lads,

The rear of the car smells. I'm pretty sure it's the rear near side wheel, or there about. It's not hot after a reasonable drive with speeds up to 60+mph but it smells. The smell is somewhere between burning plastic and poo/manure  ?

But the car drives normal, I don't think there are any unusual noises and the wheel isn't giving off heat, which is what happened when my rear off side seized. It doesn't smell like sulphur that you get from brakes/clutches when they rub.

My thoughts are:

1: the brake is seizing but not enough to get hot, but enough to make smell of sorts?
2: the wheel bearing has a problem?
3: something's rubbing slightly?
4: I drive down a country lane to work frequented by farm machinery and wonder if I've driven through some silage and it's on the exhaust system. As it gets hot, it pongs.

But I'm really flummoxed and a little worried as I've got an essential couple of weeks coming up at work and can't afford the time to get it to a garage.

Have any of you ever experienced a slight burning plastic or poo smell coming from the rear of your car. It's an odd one I know, but any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Silage is harvested grass used as a wet alternative to hay once molasses has been added and it has been matured in an oxygen free enviroment .. So if you have some of that on your exhaust it would smell unusual .

I had a rear caliper binding on my BMW 330 touring, the garage said it was ever so slight, but the wheel was still warm after normal driving and REALLY warm after a blast on the motorway! Perhaps it's not a bind?

Someone playing a prank and left something smelly tied to your exhaust?

Hmm, interesting. Any other suggestions?

Steve I'm going to say its your number 4 with something in the exhaust.
If not if you can get the car on axel stands check all the rubbers that hold the exhaust in place.
Also check for any plastic bags trapped under the car.

Check the treads of your tyres for horse s****?? We have horses in the family and I have got it stuck in the treads before when up the yard, doesn't smell great. If you're using rural roads then there's a small chance it could be that I guess. Although if this has been going on for a while it's probably not the problem

I put the car through a car wash on the setting that does an under chassis wash  . Hopefully tomorrow won't smell as bad  .

Steve

Jet wash the car using a lance, good arch and under body wash

Change your pollen filter as this can absorb smells and recirculate them through the car.... check exhaust for potential under carriage plastics getting loose or touching the exhaust also....See if the rear wheels spin freely if you get a chance to jack the car up, just to be sure there's no binding.

Cheers. I'll have a look at the weekend. The smell is much less worse today. I hope there's something on the exhaust and it's slowly burning itself off  .
