Hi All,

This is my second post here regarding my 2004 2.2CTDI sport.

The engine seems fine in terms of pull and fuel economy etc however, there is a noise coming from the engine bay that somehow sounds wrong. I have done some research about this and I think it could either be the timing chain or the aux belt and tensioners.

Are there any diagnostics i can do to narrow this problem down (short of taking it to Honda). Also how bad is a noisy timing chain? I mean is it certain to die?

Thanks in advance.

Lee

hello again lee,

problems hey? have you looked at the other posts many of the members have had regarding this, the search bar is at the top. have ago, it will help. But also the guys will want to know mileage of the car and how well has it been looked after. regular servicing from honda etc?

have fun hunting, Rob

Honestly speaking a 2004 car is probably going to need the chain doing as they were fitted with the old design. Hold a bar against the cam chain cover and see if you can hear the noise isolated travelling through it.. You will most likely need a second opinion from Honda to be sure though

I have read all the other posts on this subject and I am still unsure what a "normal" CTDI sounds like :S

I will take it to Honda this week to get their opinion on it.

It is a 2004 Ctdi Sport with 142k on the clock so a prime candidate for chain-itis :( .

Will post more after seeing what Honda have to say.

Thanks guys

Prob for the best, if Fahad has said to check it check out, do it, he knows his stuff and also let us know how you get on lee, be good to hear a result. B)

i agree, take it to a dealer and ask. they wont mind doing it ( should be for free ). and it will put your mind at ease.

we dont want another chain to pop on a members car!

In your service history does it say what oil was used?

Hi Mate, keep us all posted on the outcome of what Honda says?

Thanks guys,

I have it booked in for a health check at Chiswick Honda on Thursday. I will post back on here once they give me the outcome.

fingers crossed it isnt the chain but knowing my luck it probably is :(

Chiswick Honda are pretty good - Flagship dealer no less.

Any idea on what oil has been used?

Well it has 0w30 in there right now but I dont know what the previous owner used as the service book was not present. However, as it turns out, it was bought from Chiswick Honda so they gave me most of the service history details as it was done by them. but the last two three years it is unknown where it was done, if at all.

Is there any video on here to show me what a good 2.2CTDI should sound like? I can upload a video as well for anyone with a good ear for these things.

So I got the news from Honda and they have confirmed there is "some slight noise" from the timing chain.

The guy told me that these engines get louder as they age but it is not a good sign if the chain is making some noise. He did tell me that it doesn't mean it will break but that it is a definite sign of wear on the part.

I asked for a quote on the fix and they gave me £2581.00 which the car is not worth so I have contacted Honda customer care to ask if there is anything they can do as the car is only just outside the warranty period of 7 years and 125,000 miles. I will hear back from Honda on the 3rd of April with an answer.

I have been given an independent quote by a garage called SID Global Engines and they quoted me £500 plus parts but i am still waiting on the parts cost from them.

Soooo, not good news and we will see if Honda will be nice to me or if I am just royally screwed. The ironic thing is, I only bought this car as it came with a timing chain! haha, terrible......

I'll post an update when I hear back from Honda.

Lee

So the quote from Global Engines has come back to me at £650 all inclusive of parts and labour. That sounds really cheap to me so I am now thinking is it too good to be true?

What do you guys think?

Here is their web address SID Global Engines

Has anyone had any experience with these guys? I am always wary when using independents.

HI lee, that quote that chiswick honda gave you is that just to replace the chain ? and if so are they replacing it with a 24ct gold chain lol . bloomin expensive that pal, over two and a half grand , do they wear masks or what because that is robbery !!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

It includes a new set of injectors as they said they have to replace them if doing this job.

Lol they did say it was discounted from £3000! needless to say I will be looking for an alternative source of repair. Anyone know a good Honda mechanic either in London or Sheffield? (i'm originally from there).

I still think the guy offering it for £650 is either misquoting or not understanding the job.

pants!

Lee,

How about getting some of the guys on here to give you a quote (if you haven't already) that's if your prepared to come up this way of course.

Please however respect any price they offer, rather than try and barter one off against the other. If nothing else it will give you a good idea of a realistic figure.

There is of course Holdcroft Honda (Stoke),

Then there is Andy from Vtecdirect (Northwich area I think)

There is also Chris who is a Honda Tech who is going independent from the dealership he worked at, I think he is pretty much all setup now, Hondavtecr. ( Heywood, Oldham junction 19 M60 )

Don't forget to let them know your from here !

contacted them all now so will await the outcome.

Many thanks for the suggestions!

Lee that def sounds like the chain or oil pump chain. What ever one it needs to be sorted mate HH i would deff recommend.

I called them today and a girl said they would call me back but they never did. I will call em again tomorrow to see what they say. I will find out if Honda will help me in any way with the expense as they are calling me back tomorrow too.

The longest of long shots I reckon but you should always try.

The injectors are only replaced as part of the warranty job as they tend to break when removing them to remove the rocker cover. However if they don't break, thy can re-use them, just ensure they use new injector seals.

The bulk of the cost is actually the injectors so if you don't replace them even Honda can do the job for about £1000.

really? Well that's encouraging to hear!

I will ask at HH if they can do this for me.

Thank you :)

Hi Lee hh did my chain for 1k they can't guarantee getting the injectors out but told me 99% of time not a problem and you no your in good hands there

Well I will call them first thing tomorrow and try to get the same done. Did they also replace the oil pump chain too for the £1000?

Cheers for all your support guys!

Yes mate both chains replaced

Got it booked in at HH for this Thursday.

They quoted me around £1000 with the discount so hopefully it will be sorted by end of Thursday, fingers crossed!

Still awaiting news if Honda will cover any of the cost but I doubt it.

Thats not too bad for what it is, it is alot of work and it'll be in the best of hands. whats year/mileage is your car.

2004 / 143,000miles

I really didnt want to scrap it so I am happy to pay the 1k to get it fixed.

Even Honda customer services spoke highly of Holdcroft Honda when I told them where it was being fixed. They said it is one of their best!

Well done mate, you're in good hands. Let Steve know that the guys from TypeAccord sent you.
