Honda accord 2.2
Hi all. First post. I have had a civic cdti in the past and loved it but sold to go back to German cars as that's what I Used to always have until the last few proved unreliable so have gone back to cdti as I love the engine.
My question is I have brought an accord 2.2 on a 55 reg with a rattling timing chain. My usual garage can't do it for a week so would I be OK to use it till then l. No more than 200 miles total. Also are aftermarket kits OK?

Thanks
Jamie

It's Russian roulette. I recently bought an 04.

Collected the car on a Monday, ordered the chains, and planned my weekend to do the work.

It snapped the oil pump chain on the way home from work on the Friday.

Mines been rattling for years but not really bad. Just drive steady and give it time to pump the oil around. Out of interest how much are they charging for the job if you don't mind saying?

660 Inc vat with them supplying parts. Can get kit off ebay for £250 with 170 Inc vat labour if I go that route

The oil pump chain is the one more likely to fail.

You should be changing both of them, and ideally updating the ratchet type tensioners, and changing any worn tensioner blades.

OK. I'll look into those extra parts. were is the best place to find them.

Honda for those bits, and they're not cheap.

Think there are ***ociations with a dealer here, and a site discount arrangement.

I'm a newbie here too.

I've managed to get a timing chain kit including oil chain for 280 Inc vat but looks like I'll have to buy the oil chain guides and tensioner from honda for 200 unless anyone knows where else I can get them. Quoted 175 to fit.all in all jot bad I think.

That labour price is a little too cheap even for a backstreet garage. FairPlay to them if they think they can do it but really it's an engine out job to do properly and there is a real risk of injectors breaking when removing the cam cover.

It's an old mate doing it who owns his own garage. Says it's a four hour job approx. He used to work with me at the UK's biggest engine recon company so knows engines inside out if that makes sense.

Even with a full on Honda Master Tech and his team, it ain't a 4 hour job. Any ways good luck with it

This place offers all the parts genuine honda

also they are the affliated forum dealer so can offer it more cheaper if you reach certain number of posts.

If i was doing the timing chain on my ICTDI it would only be genuine honda parts. I wouldnt risk anything else, its a labour intensive job and not something you want to re-visit twice.

Good luck witth it.
I would also say, dont use the car untill the work is completed - it will only get worse and fail when on you when you need the car the most - SODS law - lol

Providing the injectors come out with no issues then I would allow 5-6 hours to do the job start to finish. That's roughly what it took me to do the last timing chain. Use a decent sealant as well for the sump and timing chain case.

OK. Thanks for advise. I quite handy with a spanner but shy away from timing chains. What's the job like to do. I only have jacks and small ramps.

Also the bottom pulley bolt may be very tight. You may want to look into getting that undone as well. Honda have a locking tool and you then use a breaker bar in the nut. Normally decent 1/2inch air gun will do it. If not a 3/4 inch will loosen it. Steering rack is OK to do but you will need to drop the subframe partly to do it. Jack and axle stands it is possible but be prepared for getting covered in crud

Thanks for all the advice but I'm going to let garage do this one. Do I need to replace all the guides as a matter of course even if not worn.

I'm going to do the rack though.

Up to you on this one, but for the labour and time involved I would personally change them.

Timing and oil chain done.£800 all in. Sound much better. Next job is the steering rack

Top stuff.
