Well,  Finally managed to get round changing the filters and fuel today - note to self, must check oil levels more frequently.

Got everything drained and changed with minimal fuss and collateral damage from jacking - unlike the last time!

Put the car back on the ground and turned the engine on - {CRACK}.

The frigging oil filler cap sheared off at the end of the thread and left a splattering of oil across the engine bay.

Now, lets hope Honda Letchworth have them in stock!!!!!

Is that even possible Dan? On mine you can't really over tighten the oil filler cap.. or are you talking about the oil filter cap? If it's the filter cap, that has to be torqued.. the settings are marked on the cap.
 
No mate, I mean the filler cap - the filter cap is fine.  Couldn't quite believe it myself.

Game of mercy anyone :).
 
That sounds like extreme bad luck,

How did you tighten it, just by hand ?

Presume there was a fault in the filler cap or a sharp burr on the thread that has cut into it, unless you work out every hour of the day, cannot see that being over-tightened.

Don't think you can even cross thread them.

I bet the rest of the job went smoothly, so it's down to a case of sods law.

Have you got the rest of the filler cap back out of the thread?

I think pics might be need here, as I am sure there will be many guys scratching their heads on this one!
 
haha gundam! B) Make sure you dont overtighten the now one when you get it either He-man! :)
 
ive seen it done on a civic and replaced one before. luckily there coverd in oil and a tap round with a chissel and hammer the threads just spun out with ease. worst case i have seen is a customer forgetting to put it back on and running the engine to destruction! no oil in engine = big bill lol.
 
Thanks to Halfrauds, everything is up and running.  It is not an OEM cap of course, and it is slightly too big for the engine cover to fit properly - but it will do until I get a proper one from somewhere.
 
Sorry to revive an old thread but I was topping up my oil today and went to tighten the cap back on and it just sheared off in my hand! And I know I wasn't overtightening it. It starten to tighten up and then just went loose! Was able to get the rest of the thread out ok, just spun out easily enough.
 
Glad I wasn't the only one :lol: did you manage to find one to fit?
 
Yes, the one from my wifes civic fits exactly :lol: :lol:

I've ordered a "moto build" one of ebay that'll hopefully fit as we don't really need her car for the next few days. Its an alloy one so hopefully it won't happen again!

What I did notice is neither car seems to have a rubber sealing ring which is shown on lings. Unless its not obvious. Have read over on civinfo its happened to a few others as well.
 
Ive done this twice so I ended up buying a billet aluminium cap off Ebay for about £6 , never had a problem since
