Hi,

A recent MOT test says that one of my front brakes is 75% worn. Now I'm more than happy to replace it however I'm not sure if I need to replace just the disc, the pads or both or anything else. Also whether it's a good idea to change them on all 4 wheels? Can anybody suggest?

Also I've read on here that the genuine Honda brakes are the best, is that true?

Brake pads or disks should always be replaced on both front or rear wheels at the same time.
Ideally if changing the disks, then you should change the pads too, but pads can be changed without changing the disks if the disks are still ok.

Now a good question would be how do they know that your brakes are 75% worn?
On an MoT test they are not allowed to remove your wheels so the only way they can tell is by looking through the wheel or from behind the wheel.
You can get an idea of how worn your disks are by how much of a lip is on the outside edge of the disks, but really you need to take the wheels off to check the brakes properly, or get someone you trust to do it if you are not confident.

Do you now when the disks was last changed ?
Myself I normally change 1 set of disks to 2 sets of pads depending on abnormal wear.
Honda brakes are more expensive but you get the correct fitment every time and I always buy genuine brakes.
 
Discs might also need changing if there is either a noticeable (e.g. couple of mm) lip at the edge (indicating that the main contact area has worn) or if there are obvious grooves in the contact area (indicating a worn pad has damaged the disc).

No, Honda brakes are not the best. Honda service items are adequate... much better aftermarket (specialist) stuff is available, but obviously there's a lot of inferior stuff out there as well. I always buy Pagid brakes (from EuroCarParts or CarParts4Less) which I reckon to be about the same performance as Honda, but a lot cheaper.

25% remaining isn't all that bad really, I'd be more concerned that one side appears to be wearing noticeably more than the other. This could indicate a sticky pad slider, or even a sticky caliper?

Ahh I didn't know that...I remember he did say it was just from a visual inspection and I thought I'd take his word for it :blush:

Thanks, I'll check out the brakes on those sites. Do you know how much it normally costs to have them fitted? I'm not too confident doing it myself! :blush:
 
I'm just checking those sites and there seems to be 2 different sizes for my Accord 2.4 petrol...260mm and 300mm, which one should I go for? Also the rear's are 260mm diameter and 282mm?

Yes Honda brakes are much more expensive than other aftermarket ones of the same or even better quality and yes there are aftermarkets that are not so good.

I tried Brembos (the normal ones) on my 2.0 Auto and lasted well for 2 years/20k miles, now I' m going for sthg else but similar price , around 30 sterling as I couldn't find Brembos on Ebay once again
