lookingfor accord
Hello!!,

I'm looking for an accord at the moment and I'm undecided what to get I'm currently driving an mx5 1.8 but not sure to go for a 2.0 or 2.4. I want something that has some grunt but u can feel it. And which of them is also receptive to tuning?

Thanks in advance

James

2.4 for sure. Also consider the diesel if you do 10k miles plus per annum, those are very tunable

2.4 all day. I can't compare to the 2.0 as ive never driven one but I love my 2.4 and you can still squeeze a few more horses out of them. Although be aware a 2.4 petrol is rather thirsty

My first full tank £65 I got 282miles my second was 330 miles they were both a good mix but there was a bit of traffic in the motorway mileage

Over the last 6000 miles since October, my 2.4 Exec Tourer has averaged 31.0mpg. This is a mix of long journeys, commuting and local use.

Get a 2.0 Tourer if you want the performance of a decent Transit van. Otherwise get the 2.4. The gearbox in the 2.0 is woeful aswell, revving it's nuts off cruising at 75.

Revving it's nuts off? My 2.0 does 2200 rpm on 70mph, nothing wrong with that

I love my 2.4, it just pulls like a train. It is very thirsty though. I only drive hard or in traffic, and get 220 miles to a tank. I have occasionally done some longer trips and got 280+ out of a tank.

The 2.4 is rare, but if you don't mind the fuel costs, why would you even consider something less powerful? :)

Mine averages 30mpg and my driving is probably 80% town. Then again, I drive like a grandad. Good few months since I hit VTEC YO!

The 2.4 is a no-brainer if you can find one for sale. The fuel costs are really not that bad. I get around 320 miles per tank in 80% town driving. On a motorway run to Scotland I got 420 miles with the cruise control set to 80 the whole way. It's a great engine.

I've had between 250 and 450 depending on driving conditions. If you can go easy on booting it, you should it's not that bad a for 2.4 NA engine.

Not really. You must be thinking of the 2.2 diesel. Petrol 2.0 revs at around 3100 at 70 mph. over the last year I avareage 33mpg in my 2.0 tourer with climate control on permanently. On a break last summer over Europe I was managing about 36mph.

Nope, the 2.0 doesnt rev at 3100 doing 70 or even 75. Its definitely lower then that, think it's about 2800 but I'll have to check to be sure.

Mine does 2200, but is an AT, maybe that's why

Here is all the info on 2.0 and 2.4 ratios

CL7 - Manual box ....two different gearboxes with different diffs (final drive ratio) apparently
ARK-5 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 4.388

ARK-7 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 4.105

CM1 - Manual box

GYL-3 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 3.583

CL9 & CM2 - Manual box

AST-5 & GZT-5 gearboxes
6th 0.659
diff 4.388

Auto box on Saloon & Tourer
5th 0.566
diff K20 4.562
diff K24 4.438

Engine rpm as follows

Using wheel diameter = 60 cm

Wheel circumference = π x d = 188.5 cm = 1.885 m

Road speed at 10 mph = 16 km/hr = 267 metres/min

Wheel rpm at 10 mph = 267 ÷ 1.885 = 141.5 rpm

So wheel rpm at 70 mph = 990 rpm

To get the engine rpm in top-gear, multiply 990 by the diff and by the top-gear ratio

e.g. CM2
engine rpm in 6th = 990 x 4.388 x 0.659 = 2863 rpm

Check all you like, I've been driving the thing for years and I'm right. My 2.0 2005 manual Tourer revs it's nuts off when cruising.

I've included the RPM calcs for each 7th gen
note that these are at a "true" 70 mph with 60 cm diameter wheels

Manual box 2.0 saloon (CL7) ....two different gearboxes with different diffs (final drive ratio) apparently
ARK-5 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 4.388
3388 RPM

ARK-7 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 4.105
3169 RPM

Manual Box 2.0 Tourer (CM1)
GYL-3 gearbox
5th 0.780
diff 3.583
2766 RPM

Manual box 2.4 Saloon & Tourer (CL9 & CM2)
AST-5 & GZT-5 gearboxes
6th 0.659
diff 4.388
2862 RPM

Auto box on 2.0 Saloon & Tourer
5th 0.566
diff 4.562
2556 RPM

Auto box on 2.4 Saloon & Tourer

5th 0.566
diff 4.438
2486 RPM

Where there are slight differences in engine RPM in top-gear at 70 mph, it will be due to either
1. a speedo that reads incorrectly (they usually read 5% too high) e.g. my car (CM2) reads 2700 RPM at 70 mph on the speedo
2. different size wheels/tyres (calcs are based on 225/45 17", which has a tyre wall of about 8.5 cm, giving total tyre diameter of 60 cm)

To get 3100 RPM on a 2.0 Manual Tourer (CM1), for some reason it must be fitted with the ARK-7 gearbox.

Just got back from a drive and it was doing 1850 at an indicated 40mph in 5th and my speedo over reads by some way and I am on the correct tyres.

So indicated 70 is 3237
75 - 3469
80 - 3700 and I don't think that's even 75mph, more like 72/73

Well, IMO revving its nuts off would be more like 5000 + . I think most 2.0 petrol 5 speeders would be around the 3000 mark.

I will check mine tomorrow (2.0 AT) ;)

Maybe your car has tiny wheels then ;)

i have had my 2.4 16months, gone from 103,000 miles to approx 114,000, drive from kent to norwich every other week
on a mix of 70/30% motorway/urban, get 400/430 miles to a tank,( i do drive like its a hearse though)
nothing and i mean nothing apart from consumables has ever gone wrong, apart from pulling away at lights i'm in fith gear and
it just goes....... plenty of torque. i love it, my only gripe is i have found it a bit uncomftable on my annual trip to devon, i will
defo be buying again, probadly the 8th gen .i had a mk3 mondeo 2.5 v6 ghia x before this, and it was the biggest pile of poop i have ever had, buy the honda , the best £2000 i have ever spent.....

Ok, its humble pie time. I finally got chance to get up to 70mph yesterday and, yes, it was indeed doing 3000rpm. My excuse is i do 90% of my driving in a van ahem

if anyone is interested. I have a low mileage (56000) 2.4 type s for sale. It's in silver and excellent condition.

Yes it's got 15" wheels. With the tyre profile it has the same circumference as the 17's they replaced though.

The 2.0 5 Speed Saab I came from was doing 2300 RPM at 70.

Just thought, some of the late Type S's have a 2.0. Do they have 6 gears? If so what do they rev at when doing 70? Just interested.

^ difficult to say, I doubt if it has the diff and 6th-ratio as in the AST-5 gearbox
