Hi guys,
I am really desperate if anyone could help me please.
A month ago my Honda Accord 2004 icdti with 137000 miles on the clock started showing sign of long cranking time on hot engine. I took it lightly and kept on driving. Bearing in mind I do 5 mile journey to n from work. Cold start had no problem so I was not bother until one day when it completely failed to start on hot after several seconds of cranking. Ultimately battery died and AA rescued with east start completely clueless what is the fault. Took the car to local garage and he said it is due to low fuel pressure and start motor. Both replaced and car was ok for a week before it started showing the same signs. Garage told me crank sensor, I replaced that too. Car ok for another week hot n cold. After a week same again. Changed the battery just in case. Car ok for another week. And then it failed again on hot start yesterday when the AA recued with heavy jump start. He advised to check alternator because battery is not charging fully. Replaced alternator and camshaft sensor but car is still start when she wants. Sometime starts perfect on hot and sometime cranks and engine turn over after 20 sec. Myself and garage ran out of ideas what possibly be wrong. No faults on dash, no signs nothing no misfire no power loss once running. All electrics good. Fuel rail working as normal.

Any suggestions, advice is more than welcome. I am losing hope to fix this car.
I have read all topics on google but I think no more google suggestions are there. :(

Fuel pressure relief valve. Classic hot start problem.

Thank you for quick reply Fahad. Could you please explain a bit more what it does and why in my situation it will make a difference? I bear no knowledge of cars and struggling to get my head around with this problem. Thank you once again.

The relief valve is located on the left side of fuel rail and his job is to open the valve when the maximum fuel preasure is detected ( in this case 1600 BAR ).
If the relief valve is defective can leak, so in this case it stays opened even if the fuel preasure is low, so the engine could not start because the low fuel preasure, so no preasure no injection.
You can diagnose this yourself, it's an easy job

Exactly as Jan has said. When the valve struggles to close it cannot hold the required pressure at the fuel rail and sends fuel back through the return cycle.

It's job is to open when there is too much pressure and prevent an explosion at the fuel rail manifold.

Thank you Jan Accord for explaining but how come the car starts in the morning without any problem and not starting when hot. Also the fuel pressure was showing 30 bars when I turn the ignition on and raising to 60 when it cranks.
I do feel it could be fuel pressure related problem and not big but hard to identify. I will get the valve and replace it as I have spent loads of money already. No harm in changing Valve too.

Because by the time the engine has cooled the valve has probably worked itself into the closed position and is able to hold the required pressure.. it's not an expensive part and easy to change, worth doing.

Thank you Fahad for following up. If all the fingers pointing to faulty pressure valve then i will go and change it. I will let you know once its done.cheers

Euro car parts doesn't have the fuel pressure limiter and the link Fahad you sent on ebay it is from 2005 accord. Any other suggestions please? Can I get this part from scrap just to speed up things and see if it really is what we think or does it have to be new?

Don't you think that is better try the part before buy?
You have to take off 4 nuts and disconect 1 tube...thats all

Ok i went to garage and the guy unscrewed the 17mm bolt aka fuel pressure limiter. No fuel came out while unscrewing. After closely inspecting the Valve it doesn't look faulty or worn out. Sorry If I sound a bit stupid but does it indicate anything? No diesel after unscrewing? Appreciate your help.

You need to run a leak back test, search the forum to find out how. The valve is the same across the range so a 2005 is fine

Unsrewing it you did nothing.
Warm up the engine and then test it, run the engine and keep monitoring the preasure on the tester, raise the rpm's slowly and chech is some fuel going out the relief valve ( just disconect the tube from it ) .
Usualy the leak is detected even on the idle.
If the valve opening is detected before hitting the 1600 bar preasure is defective so needs to be replaced

Today, car ran the way it should. Started the way it should cold and hot. I done 15 mile trip on it. Left it running then switch off and then on, all perfect. Left it for hour and half before starting again. No problems. Every friday she breaksdown and every sunday it starts working fine. Lol this problem is so intermittent that it confuses me alot. This evening I started after day and half and engine fired up straight away. I yet to do the leak test which I will do tomorrow and then would be sure if the problem is really with fuel pressure. Meanwhile Anything you can think of please do share.

Problem on the top of problem.. I took the car out as I had to pick one of my mate. Car started fine again but as soon as I was on dual carriage way the glow plug light started flashing and eventually losing lower not going over 2000rpm. Came back home turn the ignition off turned it again engine started no problem but light still flashing. Waited 15 mins but no luck? Any suggestiin on this please?

Flashing glow plug is normally low fuel pressure or low boost pressure.

Get the AA to read the error codes and post it here. A faulty PRV can cause low fuel pressure if it's stuck open and letting fuel back out of the fuel rail.

Fellas..car sorted. Leaky fuel injector causing hot start problem. Injector replaced and car starts the way it should. Good job done by Auto Diagnostics Swindon. Charged 270pounds. Car drives mint now and no more hot or warm start problem.

Thank you all for your help too.

That's interesting. Leaky injector would have been easy to spot when you lifted off the engine cover and should have caused an issue with hot and cold start.

Glad it's sorted anyway

Amazingly there were no signs of leaky injector or may be the garage I used had no idea if the injector is leaking. I still have to do some stress tests on the car tonight to see if it withstand the fix.
So far so good and hope it stays this way for sometime lol.

I'm back. :( Car goes in Limp mode in 5th gear on motorway when i try to rev it up. Any suggestions on this guys? Engine turn off and start again works ok. I am a heavy foot driver and I rev the car 3k-3.5k rpm in 2nd and 3rd gear normally. Only glowplug light comes on and flashing. NO Engine check light.

Fuel or boost pressure mate. It will have logged an error code even if the engine light hasn't illuminated.

Have you had it on a diagnostic. If you haven't do that first, sounds like your mechanic has been throwing parts at it.

I had a bad experience with one garage and he didn't know what he is doing. 800pound spent for 270pound job. Anyway, after diagnostics they found leaky injector and they changed it. All good..starting fine running fine until yesterday when I went on motorway and it was going in limp mode after 5th gear. I can rev in 4th gear no problem. The car feels very heavy like it struggling to get the speed which never been the case before. But how come the car doesn't go in limp mode intercity? No matter how fast I dtive.

Why don't you just get a diagnostic and take the guesswork out of it.

As has been implied Zee, stop taking it to mechanics, find someone with an OBD reader, read the codes, and tell us what the codes are.

I had a similar hot start problem recently and changed not only the pressure relief valve but also the fuel filter. The previous garage had put a Crosland fuel filter in. My regular mechanic cut it open and it was awful. They didn't look the same and not big enough for my car.

Swapped it for a genuine fuel filter from Honda and it's been fine ever since.

Hot and cold start problem gone after changing the leaky fuel injector. But now the issue is that its going in limp mode (staying at 2100rpm) in fifth gear. Glow plug light keeps flashing until I turn off the engine and starts again.

Get a diagnostic scan.
