Thanks to all for suggestions. Car back from honda with new high pressure diesel pump fitted, seems fine-more responsive than I can remember. £2k bill will be paid for by warranty company!

Ouch! HP fuel pump failures are thankfully rare and I'm sure normally down to misfuelling at some point. Anyways glad it's sorted.
