Hello there

My uncle has a 2004 Accord CTDI, just completed 135,000 miles. For the past few months, the car intermittently looses power and goes into limp mode. The glowplug light flashes on starting and eventually after a short while the car returns to normal. This fault is now occurring more frequently.

My uncle has been taking the car to a 'back street' garage and I do not think the fuel filter has been changed for some time. I plan to change the fuel filter tomorrow

We took it to a Honda dealer, they said that the P1401 AND P1065 codes were showing up and the car needed a new EGR valve and a new high pressure pump, total cost fitted is over £3k

If the fuel filter does not remedy the issue, I would be grateful for any pointers.

Any ideas whether I can get a reconditioned pump?

Is it worth repairing the car? Is there much life left beyond 135k miles or should I get rid now?

Any DIY links on how to remove the EGR and clean

Many thanks???

Welcome to TA. There's tons of advice in the diesel section for the 7th gen on these issues. The fuel filter needs to be OEM, not an after market off the shelf part. The Accord diesel is very, very fussy in this regard!

There are some other issues, but I'm sure the Diesel boys will be able to inform you better.

This is very likely to be the fuel filter... make sure that a Bosch filter (part number ending in 442) is fitted, as other filters could well cause problems.

Hopefully it isn't the fuel pump. But, if it is, get a secondhand one from a reputable car breaker.

Start with fuel filter and make sure its a honda genuine part, very important

To sort out the EGR valve issue is go for a remap with EGR valve delete plus a error deletion, and then blank the inlet manifold with a metal plate, I would sort the future EGR valve pros plus some awesome power you ever have on this car..
And is much more cheaper than pay for other EGR valve and eventually will fail again. Call fahad who will sort out the remap for you mate!

+++ FUEL FILTER FOR SURE. After going into limp mode and then stopping the engine for 3 minutes it resume normal service, but will go into limp again shortly after, if you give the priming bulb a good squeeze normal service will last a bit longer, but get that filter changed PDQ, I am at 187,000 and confident of going much further.

Thank you all for your helpful advice.

OK here's the update, I had the fuel filter and all seems to be running ok. Should I clean the EGR or leave alone as running ok

They're very easy to damage - just leave it alone. If it happens again, get in touch for a proper diagnostic and consider having it disabled with our EGR OFF. I can't believe (or rather I can believe) a Honda dealer told you that you needed a brand new HPP instead of a fuel filter!
