Hi,

I've recently had to replace the battery on my car, it was still running the original battery from new!

Things were running fine for a few days, but the red battery light has just come on and stays on whilst driving - it sort of pulsates bright red then low red.

I've got it parked up at home now and after checking all the terminal connections on the battery, it looks like the alternator needs replacing.
After ringing around I've found been quoted on average £370 for parts and labour (including new tensioner belt)....but managed to find somewhere that can recondition the original one with a guarantee for £50

I'm currently reading up on how to remove the alternator as this is something I have never done before. Does anyone have a step by step guide on this? any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've disconnected the negative terminal on the battery to prevent it from draining.

Many thanks in advance

Ash

Hey dude, I've never done this myself or seen any guides on this. But having a look at the electronic manual, it seems like quite a involved job, especially as a lot of the air con parts are connected to it. Can the reondition place possibly fit it for you? I remember my Dad replaced his alternator in his old Volvo at a place where they reconditioned them and the guy at the shop fitted it for him for extra tenners, took only around 30mins, but it wasn't a very complicated car and had no air con.

If your not good with spanners then I wouldn't take this on, its quite a job and not one to use to learn on

As long as you have the right spanners it shouldn't take too long. I'm a novice and it took me about two hours. I didn't find it that bad to be honest. But as the post above says, if you're not that good with the spanners, get someone else to do it for you.

if you gonna take it to recondition, ask them to replace ball bearings in it too. As it is the same job(like change water pump when changing belts). :)

p.s. I need to change ball bearings at my acc. Does anybody knows what are ball bearing sizes?

To the OP, are you still wanting a guide for this? If so I can write you one up later tonight if you wish.

It's actually very easy on these cars providing you have the right tools, and can be done in 30-60 minutes. The hardest part is getting the auxillary belt off as it's very close the the chassis leg.

Hi guys, thanks to everyone for the help and replies, I've been busy with work but hope to have some time this week to do this. Andy thanks for video link, that really helps alot, and Linas thanks for the tip I will ask them to replace the ball bearings.

BlueVTEC, any guide you could provide would be fantastic! I may need to buy one or two tools depending on what you recommend.

Thanks again to everyone

ash2000. I you will change ball bearings please write dimensions or type of them here. It would be grateful.

I am planning to change them by myself, but I want to buy them in advance, before starting work.
