Having had crank problems with my 04 Tourer about 2 years ago and having rebuilt the engine with a replacement crank, rods etc. the bl**dy thing has failed again. (Spun big end)

We have been using EXOL 0-30W oil changes at 6000 mile intervals and checked for level once a week.

We also have a Megane 1.9 DCTI which was running the same oil and wiped out its mains about 3 weeks ago.

I am not going to rebuild the Honda again and will consider breaking it as it is generally good, has sound lights, bumpers, VSA, tail gate motor, transmission.

It had new oil and timing chains and tensioners 15k miles ago so the motor should be worth something.

I hope it's not the oil you have been using, I have been on the same for the last two years, no problems at all. Now on 176,000 miles. What else have you been doing "Track days" ?

Mileage is 160K and the car is driven relatively carefully- 2500rpm Motorway cruising and not abused.

The engine was exchanged with a rebuilt unit 15k miles ago from a specialist in Stockport.

The Megane which spun a centre main used the same oil.

Oil was changed every 6000 miles since rebuild.

I know it looks like the common denominator here, but many of us have been using that oil without issue. I would say the Honda wasn't rebuilt correctly, and the Megane is just French and they like to break for fun.

Sorry to hear of your woes by the way.

I just don't have the patience or the time to try to tackle another rebuild even if the supplier deals with some of the costs - which I think is unlikely.

I feel it is time to cut my losses and sell as a project or break it for parts as everything else is sound.

I have it on EBay for £1100 but if it doesn't move in 10 days or so we will start to break it and sell the parts.

I cant see the oil being the problem either, must be an issue with the rebuild, you would probably get more for parts

I tend to agree about the rebuild not being perfect but I am worried about the oil.

After 6000 miles the oil had a very poor consistency and looked as if had been used for many more miles.

I also bought 25 litres of Exol Vanguard Rally 20/50 for my Air Cooled 911 and when driven hard the oil frothed badly and foam appeared out of the breather - this never occurred with either Joe Gibbs Driven XP4 or Valvoline VR1.

I changed the oil back to VR1 and no more frothing and breather issues even last weekend at Spa during track use.

Oil temperature on the 911 engine is 90 degC, pressure is good and compression are spot on at around 180psi. The engine give around 240BHP (3.0 litre) and the frothing has only occurred with the EXOL product.

As regards the 0-30 Synthetic I am reasonably happy that in diesels it is OK as long as they are in good order but what about when they are worn?

I would agree that the re-build may not have been great - I certainly don't want more parts form the same source.

Without extensive testing we would never know but two engines - even though one is a low mileage Renault - rings a bell and makes me worry.

The easiest option is to use an alternative oil and I believe that the EuroCarParts brand is made by Shell so I may try this in future.

My confidence in both the Honda and EXOL brand is very low at the moment.
