ive got a burning rubber type smell coming from both rear wheels after even just a short drive of a few miles. The garage have checked the brakes and they all release and retract as they should do. What else could it be as they seem a bit stumped?

Tourer or saloon Kev?

The tourer has separate drum brakes for the handbrake... maybe that's binding and the garage failed to check?

Is the car easy to push by hand? Are the discs getting overly warm after a short drive (particularly if one side is, but the other isn't)?

It's the saloon. They checked handbrake against the mot rollers and held and released fine. Brakes get a bit warm but can still touch them. I've got newish winter tyres on, maybe it could be them but there is no smell from the front which has them on too. 4 wheel Tracking was done too with the readout printed off showing all green. Can't find anything wrapped round the exhaust melting either. Just stumped.

Are the tyres directional and maybe the rears are on the wrong side, not sure if they do them in winter tyres?

Do a spirited drive for 20 minutes or so, then put your hand on the wheels, and keep them there, if the smell is still rubbery then it could be anything, however if you smell roast beef then it is a safe bet that your brakes are binding. LOL

It's a manual. I could touch the rear brake calipers even after a 100 mile drive and the tyres didn't seem hot either, barely even warm. The wheel is barely warm to the touch where it bolts to the hub too. The tyres are all facing the right direction too, all have outside on them, no direction arrows. They are cooper weather master snow.

Turns out the smell is coming from the exhaust. Something in the backbox is getting a bit hot. Do the universal stainless steel boxes fit? I've seen a few cheap ones on eBay around 50/60 quid. I won't have the car for much more than a year so it doesn't need to last me years.
