Hi everyone,
just joined here today having just bought myself an August 2005 Accord i-CTDi with 100k on the clock. Have been reading with some dismay about the cam chain issues, not to mention the manifold and VGA issues. My main concern though is the cam chain as this has potentially disastrous consequences. The car is definitely not covered by any warranty for the cam chain issue now. It has less than the 125k cut off but more than the seven years. I'm now thinking about cam chain problem avoidance and mitigating potential high repair bills.
I read somewhere else today that apparently the cam chain issue is really a result of over-fuelling by the injectors which in turn degrades the oil prematurely leading to cam chain wear. My engine at the minute sounds fine, I think. Very quiet actually for a diesel. My questions are as follows... (hopefully some of you kind folks out there can impart some of your wisdom)
1. Is the cam chain issue inevitable at some time in the future? My plan was to run this car into the ground with perhaps another 100k over the next five or six years.
2. Am I more likely to avoid cam chain problems with more regular oil changes using the right top quality oil, say every 6k? I will also be doing quite a number of short journeys, under 5 miles at a time which the Honda says is 'high stress'.
3. If the chain does get noisy what are the chances of it actually breaking (anecdotal evidence is really what I'm asking about). Have there been many instances when the chain has actually broken and wrecked the engine? I could learn to live with a rattly cam chain if I had a fair degree of confidence it would not actually break.
4. Can the chain be removed without engine removal? I know it's a big job and have ready about the potential for injectors having to be removed too.
Ironically I went for the Accord instead of the Lexus IS220d as I did nothing but read of frequent head gasket issues with that engine which in most cases is terminal. I wonder am I getting worried about something that will probably not raise its ugly head. I'm just concerned that at some stage I may have to fork out huge sums of money on a car that's worth no more than £3,500.
I would immensely appreciate any feedback.
