My catalytic converter probably needs replacement as I am hearing some exhaust noise coming from the middle of the car.

are there any advantages of removing it and just put a stainless steel pipe with a socket for the sensor?
 
NOISE :D . And slightly improved breathing which should gain a horse power or two ;) . However, this would be classed a performance enhancing modification and need declaring to your insurers. Also it will fail its next MOT I believe without a cat.
 
dont worry about mot/insurance as I dont live in uk :)

i was reading that the car will run rough without it and use more fuel? is that true?

does it effect a lot in noise ? :S
 
without a cat it would be very loud.....

if thats something you want go for it, does the maltese government not have a mot equivalent...

do you have tax ? :p
 
depends how load it is hehe. we have sort of mot but it isnt that strict as in the uk

they are mostly strict on tinted glass
 
are there any downside of removing the catalytic? since there are sensors? will a light in the dashboard light up?

A Downside from removing is more environmental pollution , if you don't care I would suggest removing it if it is clogged. I am not an expert, but i guess you have to make a "cheat" .i.e Maybe you should place the sensors back on the pipe you will fix after removing the catalyst, at the same distance as they were originally on the catalyst probably, otherwise you will get lights on dashboard.
There are numerous pros and cons opinions on the net about removing catalytic converters, I was thinking of it but as I am not sure I haven't decided yet. Mine dow not have a problem, was just going to remove for that small amount of extra breath some claim. But even for this I am not sure it really works or it has an adverse effect on performance. :unsure:
 
Can you just clarify if you are talking about a 7th gen petrol or dieel please?

If it's a petrol then yes there is probably a slight performance benefit to be had but you need to be careful to ensure the O2 sensors are still getting a reading, otherwise some sort of ECU remapping or O2 sensor bypass needs to be fitted to ensure the AFR's are still within threshold.

If it's a diesel - then I would advise against it. The diesel turbo's need some backpressure to ensure it's spooling correctly, and by derestricting it you are making the turbo work a little harder which can cause premature wear.

That's my 2 cents.
 
***uming it's a petrol engine, then you'll need to fit a spacer/'fooler' to the secondary lambda sensor, otherwise you will get a warning light because the cat will be seen to be having no effect.

does the exhaust back box produce enough backpressure? (i have 2)

decided to go underneath the car to check the damage of the cat and found that the guard was making the noise. two big jubilee clips did the job.
 
Nicer cost effective option! :)
