1.8, 6th gen Accord
Hi guys,

In a few weeks I will replace the clutch of my 6th gen 1.8 Accord, and since I am there, I will replace the rear main seal. The proper way to remove the seal is to remove rear main seal housing, replace the seal and re-install the seal housing. To remove the seal housing, I have to remove the oil pump... In fact, it's possible to replace the seal without removing the seal housing, but since I have an oil leak from the oil pan gasket, I will just re-do the gasket and try to stop that leak.

If I am not wrong, this engine does not have an oil pan gasket. We should apply Hondabond to "form a gasket in place" (FGIP). Tracking the Hondabond part numbers referenced in the repair manual, the current sealant is the Honda Liquid Gasket 1216E - 120, part number 08CRAHLG120G, which is a bit pricey. (http://www.lingshondaparts.com/lings_part_number_search_a10.php?partdes=08C70-K0334M)

At local parts stores told me about a REINZOSIL sealant (http://www.reinz-industrial.com/EN/PRODUCTS/Sealing-Compounds/REINZOSIL.aspx), which seems to be identical to Hondabond, but can't find many opinions on it.

I also found good references to Permatex Ultra Grey, but can't find locally. I would have to buy it online...

The thing is, the rear main seal housing also needs to take some sealant, and if I find the sealant is no good, I will have to re-do everything...

Do you guys know any good alternative to Hondabond that you trust? Or is it best to stick with Honda stuff?

Hondabond is three bond gasket sealant.
Also sold as Yamabond etc.
It's fantastic stuff. Last tube I bought is only half gone and it's done 3 engines so far.

As above it's made by threebond and is excellent.

A quality non acid RTV with a wide temp range and oil resistance should be fine.

There are times you need a semi drying sealant, like Hondabond 4 but most other time RTV does the job.

I guess I will stick with Hondabond, at least I know it works!

I use only Hondabond too, think I got mine from Tegiwa for £15, can get it from H-tune too, check them out, think they do worldwide delivery.

At Tegiwa they have the HondaBond HT, with partnumber 08718-0004. With shipping costs, it will cost me about 30 Euro: http://www.tegiwaimports.com/hondabond-ht-honda-engine-gasket-sealer-sealant.html

Meanwhile, the HondaBond HT has been replaced by " HONDA LIQUID GASKET/SEALANT 1216E", with part number 08CRA-HLG-120G. This new item is not available at Tegiwa, but I am able to get it from several my local Honda shop or online, such as: https://www.all4honda.com/en/webshop/123-prelude-1992-1996/128-engine-tuning/666-engine-general/oem-honda-liquid-gasket-sealant-1216e-universal-details.html

The new stuff is more pricey, about 54€ from all4honda, but it's also comes in a larger tube, 120 grams vs 1.9 fl. oz (about 60 grams). In the end, they are about the same price. Considering this facts, I think I will go for the new stuff.

Ah thats interesting to know, thanks.

I have been talking with the guys from All4Honda, and they prefer/recommend the Hondabond HT for the oil pan, its what they use. They say it is has a better heat resistance. Now I don't know what to do...
I think that now I am more biased toward the Hondabond HT. One thing is for sure, there are many good references Hondabond HT, as for the other new stuff, can't find many.... Don't know...

Your over thinking it. Your oil temp will probably see 120c max so pretty much any oil resistant sealant will work.

Yeah, I guess you are right. That's the problem of reading too much [emoji4]
