hi guys,

Yesterday I could hear like a tappet kind of rattle from the engine, so i took the engine cover off and found this:

theres a lot of brown dirt around the first injector and i think thats the fuel leak around the injector...

and maybe its not clear in the video, but this was the rattling noise from the location of the injector:

now, i rang Honda and they say to replace the injector it will cost a whopping £400inc VAT

but ive been told by another mechanic that it could be the seal inside the injector that could be the fault hence the leak, have any of you guys had this kind of problem as i dont want to be paying £400 just to find out all i needed was the o ring seal.....oh and also earlier posts about fuel relay and car not starting when hot after stopping for a while leads me to believe that it was the injector causing the fault....

I think the problem lies with getting the injector out without breaking it...

damn dan you reply was faster than superman  yeah the woman at honda said theyre a PITA to get out, can a competent mechanic take it out without breaking it do you think?

Exactly...I don't think you can know until you start. If the seating needs regrinding then you need specialist skills and tools. Adam has had real ballache with his.

There is a long and sorry thread about it.

Great, not what I wanted to hear but oh well, thing is I had my timing chain replaced by honda and I asked them were new injectors fitted, they said no, I'm sure I heard someone say they fit new injectors when the timing chain is replaced, all I know is there may be trouble ahead :p

When did you get the chain fitted?
The injectors as far as I know is part of the recall for the timing chain. I would take it back to the dealer who did it?

You would think that they would only replace them if they damage the old ones whilst taking them out, which is probably quite often! Cannot see why Honda would go to the expense of replacing perfectly good injectors and then be mean enough to insist on the old oil to be put back in after a chain replacement  I'm probably wrong though

I don't know but I got hold of a second hand working injector for 50 quid question is, does it need to be reprogrammed? It's the same diesel as mine.

Yes it will Waj. There was a thread similar to yours recently, that will need coding too.

Waj, if you can get a decent mechanic to remove it without snapping it inside the head then you're laughing.. CJ can recalibrate your injectors for a reasonable fee.

fahad, theres a diesel specialist about 15 miles away from me, taking it to them tomorrow, ive been told that the old injector if taken out can be refurbed or if its the case of the injectors seals perished, get the injector out, replace the seals etc, cj its definitely the injector closest to the oil filler cap all other injectors are clean apart from that one and the noise is definitely from there....

I wonder if this us related to previous performance issues you've had?

This all sounds very similar but my injector was messier:

I would say if Honda quoted you £400 for a new one then take it, I went to a local garage and the part cost £360 on its own! Mine is now fixed but I need to get it recoded using an HDS.

Well took it to the garage diesel specialists, he looked at it and said I've had a few diesel accords in with same problem, he was adamant the injector was fine but the seal was broke so he said he will replace the seal and o ring first

Fingers crossed mate!

This thread reminded me of my own to an extent. I noticed a few months ago a bit of dirt mostly around the first injector. Still haven't decided if its caused by a diesel leak (from the injector or hp fuel line), or just a bit of oil spill from topping up and getting thrown around the place. No sign of any carbon deposits and the underside of the cover is pretty clean. Maybe I'm just being paranoid! Timing chain changed just over a year ago and no issues.

stephen, i was thinking the same thing as you when i first saw the crud and dirt around the first injector, that it was oil spill when topping up oil but then ive been having starting issues which are getting worse and also i heard a loud tapping noise when i started the engine first thing in the morning and it was coming from the first injector...so i concluded it had to be an injector leak if your cars running fine then your paranoia is just paranoia mate

Thanks waj. Maybe to be on the safe side I'll get my dealer to double check it (have to go in to get my driveshaft sorted anyway). If they are happy enough with it I'll clean it up and be extra careful when toping up and keep an eye on it.

right guys, an update, ok so as quoted by Honda £400+ for new injector, i contacted Honda parts and ordered the injector gasket/washer which was about £5 and the injector bolt again around the £5 mark.

The mechanic i took it to was quite adamant that he can take the injector out with ease, and he was right, took him less than 10 mins which i was quite shocked at as i was told they were a PITA to take out, guess i got lucky...

He then used a seat cutting tool to clean the injector seat, he took a while to do this and when he finished i had a look inside the bore and it was sparkling clean. He applied the washer to the injector pintle then applied some white grease around the injector and fitted it back again.

No leak, no rattling, no chuffing and it starts first time everytime when its hot, just goes to show that by replacing a £5 gasket i have saved over £400 im a bit dissapointed that i didnt take any photos for the forum i totally forgot as i was so annoyed about the problem all i wanted was to get the damn thing fixed anyhoo if anyone else has a similar problem please go with the cheaper option first and see if that works... :D

Excellent news Waj - name and acclaim the garage bud!

Dan, thanks for the thumbs up mate, I live in Redditch and I came across this lad, Ben, by off chance about ten years ago then he was working for Vauxhall. He became self employed and Ive always tried to take my car to him cuz he knows his cars..but sometimes hes really really busy, but all credit to him for the excellent work he done :D

Hey Guys

Does anyone have the part numbers for the washers and bolts?

Want to replace my 4 as I think they are gone. Well one definately has.

TIA.

A bit late, but this is the copper gasket I will be attempting to replace later today, just over a fiver from the local dealer.

http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine-honda-ictdi-idtec-injector-seal-p-5367.html

I've loosened the allen bolt - slightly - that holds the clamp with the engine running, so far nothing has moved despite revving the engine.

Ive put some lubricant around the base of the injector and will try again in an hour or so.

You can anneal the copper rings and re-use them.

Heat them to cherry red with a blowtorch (or the gas hob When the wife's not looking ;) ) and drop them into cold water. Makes them fat again and as good as new.

(Also works for copper brake line washers)

4x annealed washers. Money saved, and quicker than popping into town to the dealers.

That's a great top tip!

The best bit's the sound they make when you drop them in a mug of water.

Strangely satisfying. Sounds like money being saved.
