loss of power, no overheating but white smokey exhaust

Hi All,
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
I have an Accord Tourer 2.2l i-CDTI - it's done approx 115k miles, and I have only owned it for two months.
Until today I have had no problems with it, I have now driven nearly 4k miles in it without incident,

Today driving up the A505, there was a kind of pop sound, and the exhaust went quite smokey (white smoke) and a very significant loss of power.
I needed to get home and kept driving another 20 miles, most on dual carriageways but needed to slow down / go down to first gear for roundabouts.

I found the car was smokey on changing gear but once in that gear the smoke would stop, but there was a significant drop in power and therefore acceleration was very very slow - to the extent i needed to put hazzards on, but going up the gears i was just about able to get up to 70 mph and 5th gear after about a minute (may be longer).

There are no signs of any leaks, no overheating, no warning or malfunction lights, but as I have said smokey exhaust and serious loss of power.

Anyone got any ideas? Transmission fluid perhaps? It was serviced 5000 miles ago by a Honda dealer

Welcome it sounds like your car has gone into limp mode.
Can you give age and mileage of car and what service history the car has.
When was the FF last changed and was it a genuin filter

Hi thank you for responding - it is an 04 plate. Mileage is 115k, it has FSH, I cannot see if the FF was changed on the 110k service, but it was at 102k

check oil level, if I'm right there should be less oil as I reckon you have lost your turbo and oil gone through turbo to pistons where it was burnt thats why you had white/blue smoke and also loss of power.

Thanks buddy, I hope not; I had turbo go on my last car aswell . . typical!
 
Kim don't over fill it as this can be as bad as to little oil.
Between the min and max on the dip stick is 1 litre
 
Also to add to this check your coolent level as white smoke in a Diesel would indicate head gasket gone.
 
Sounds like a blown turbo I'm afraid, very rare but not unheard of on these cars..
 
Sounds exactly the same as what happened with my last car, and yup, blown turbo i'm afraid.
 
You could be lucky and just have a turbo hose that's popped off and is dumping all your boost. That would make a lot of smoke and the car would be slow too.
 
Hopefully just a boost pipe has come off most likely. Check to make sure you have enough coolant and not overheating too

hi all, I checked coolant and that's fine, does sound like a blown turbo - any idea on cost of repair?

Well a genuine new unit from honda is circa £2k :eek:

Im sure you can also contact some turbo refurbishment companys.. i would be expecting to pay around £500 for the turbo... and im sure there is a DIY guide on here to fit it yourself to save labour :)

Hi pal the turbo is cooled by oil. Check the oil level mate and see what that's on.

when the car smokes, does the smoke hold in the air or does it dissapear ?

if the smoke is quite 'thick' and holds in the air then its oil being burnt.
if the smoke dissapears shortly after leaving the exhaust then its coolant :)

The oil level is at the minimum level marker on the dipstick. The smoke holds in the air, but unlike when the last car on which I managed to blow the turbo, the smoking only occurs when changing gear, once in that gear for a 20 seconds or so, the exhaust stops smoking.
The engine is not making any untoward noises, and no malfunction lights of any kind are coming on - not even oil pressure light
 
Obviously this needs to be diagnosed properly because it could be many things, some serious others not. White smoke suggests to me unburnt diesel in the exhaust gases. Hopefully it's just popped the hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold.

you won't see oil pressure light as long as there is enough oil in the engine and pressure is ok, damaged turbo will burn oil and that's it and after when it will be burnt all you'll see the light ;)
 
Hi All, thank you very much for all your responses and help on this issue.

So, it was unfortunately the turbo, pretty unhappy as I only did 2500 miles in the car since I bought it before it happened.
I bit the bullet and got someone to replace the turbo at a cost of £1550 for a new turbo with three year warranty, oil, a minimal number of other parts and labour - as the minimum from my locall Honda garage was £2100 I guess I got a deal!

So fingers crossed regards the rest of my experience with this car!

Ouch that's a lot of money for a turbo but I guess if you have a long warranty and more importantly, peace of mind.. then it's not so bad. Were you given any reason as to the reason for the failure? And what oil have you replaced it with? I hope it's 0w/30 fully synthetic. Remember, the correct oil viscosity is key to ensuring your turbo gives you a long and healthy service.
